| You can pretty much forget this. You can disable right-click on a page to
prevent someone from right-clicking the image, but they'll still be able to
use the View | Source to see the HTML and see the path to the actual image.
If you disable the View Source option in the menu also, the individual can
still just find it in their browser's cache because the browsers cache the
images and files for viewing. Lastly, they can just take a screenshot and
crop the image in a graphics program. The easiest thing to do is create a
watermark on the image itself that enables you to show off the photo, but
render it useless for other individuals to attempt to use in their site. For
example: your name diagonally across the image with the opacity set so that
you can still see the photo through the image, but the name is not
completely opaque. This let's anyone foolish enough to steal it and use it
somewhere perform advertising to you, though almost nobody wants to use an
image that has someone else's name plastered on it.
Hope this helps,

Unfortunately, there is no way to protect content viewed in
a browser, be it text or images. There are javascripts out
there which will try to defeat the right-click, but all a
user needs to do is turn off javascript and then the right
click is turned back on. Even if they don't do that, the
images will be in the temporary internet files. All the
scripts do is say 'amateur' all over the place.

| Hi Rossy,
Let's say you wrote a book, and copyrighted it. Can this prevent people from
making copies of your book? No. It can only provide you a legal means of
redress if someone does so and you catch them at it. Same thing goes here.
You can't prevent people from copying your images.

Digimarc is one of the most popular providers of digital watermarking. Digimarc is included in
Adobe Photoshop and many other image editing tools. When you apply a watermark to an image with
Digimarc, the watermark is added to the entirety of the image. Therefore, even if you crop out
large portions of the image, the entire watermark is retained and can be read. Digimarc offers
a free watermark reader that can read watermarked images.

| Let me expand on this-
Adobe PS and other image programs can apply a Digimarc
digital watermark on an image. It is not something that is
seen on the website, but is encoded to the file. There is
nothing that prevents a viewer from copying or printing the
image. What you can use it for is if someone posts the
image on the web then you can verify if in fact it is your
image.
The Digimarc; however, is not free. It is on a subscription
basis

| "I added my website name in every picture. " I don't see any evidence of
this...
I have also been a wedding photographer (before web sites) and I have done
web pages for a wedding photographer. If you optimized your photos well so
that none are more than 50-60 kb apiece and only 72 dpi they won't be good
enough for prints. The image in the page that say Enter is 95kb ... much too
large and it loads slowly on a dial-up. The www.videoregio.com 'banner' is
174 kb ... way too large. The Events page is so wide that I have to scroll
and because there are so many thumbnails the page is taking forever to load.
Maybe only use 4 - 5 thumbnails in each row, not 8 as you have it now. Some
thumbnails are not going to larger versions. #72 Jamie Lee Garza is 82 kb
.... should be about 40 at the most.
You also need to take all the spaces out of your image file names. Only use
letters and number and _ or -, but not ( and ).
Well, that was much more than you asked for! Also read this article:

should have good instructions and you can choose whatever works best.

| Not a suggestion, but a question to others more savvy than I --
What about using Flash to deter the heisting of posted photos (especially if
one "animates" a slideshow of photos that parades across the page, not
providing the visitor a single, stable image to capture.) Wouldn't Flash
defeat the right-click or cache "save" and at least make life more difficult
for those using a screen capture?

| If you're selling hi-quality prints....then put low-quality examples on the net
or with a 'watermark' with "copyright such and such" through it.
Due to the nature of the web, as soon as anyone views a web the imaes, text,
pages are already on the HDD since that is what the web cache is for.
Otherwise, set up a "user" area where people need to register and log in - and
not automatically, something that you can 'approve' or 'reject' user applications
to join (might be a lot of work but it may also help identify those who just want
your images and those there for a legit purpose.).
But the rule of thumb is "if a visitor has gone to your page, your images are
already on their machine".

| I haven't found a true way to keep people from stealing them either. However,
I have a trick I use. I make an exact copy of the photo I want to protect,
and lower the opacity of the photo layer to about 40% or so. I type over the
top of the photo, that I am flattered that they like my work, and offer to
sell them a frameable copy in any size they like. Then I leave them my email
address. I merge the layers and save it for the web from PS. Then I go into
front page and set behavoirs to swap images on the mouseover - with the 40%
image and my "buy my photo" pitch. I just came up with this idea about 20
minutes ago and put it together. I haven't uploaded the change to my domain
server yet, but I figure most casual surfers will get the point.
I got the idea while making an animation effect. I tested it, and when I
right clicked to copy and save, the function copied and saved the swaped
photo - instead of the original. However, tonight, it is copying the original
photo and i do not know why. I think I will go with putting a watermark layer
on the photo and let them steal it with my name on it, that way I wont have
to worry. Be sure to put your watermark in an area where a tedious and
patient PS artist cannot remove it. I have successfully removed watermarks
before in PS, buts its a tedious pain in the rear. I wasnt stealing the photo
really, I didnt care about it. I wanted to see if I was good enough to pull
it off, and its not that hard to do, especially if you put it in the wrong
place.

| Nice idea,
Another is to put a transparent gif over the top, when right clicked, you
get the transparent layer saved :-)
Nothing can stop a screen dump (although small res), so you will never
truly stop anyone getting a pic:-(

| Alot of wasted effort. Those who would take them for purposes you are
trying to prevent wouldn't be slowed down by either. Those who are slowed
down are not the ones you are trying to block.
In my mind this activity is functionally equivalent to the "This site best
viewed in IE at 1600x1280px resolution" disclaimer.
Spend this time and effort on improving the functionality of your site
rather than trying to prevent something you cannot prevent.

really just a time waster.

| Just put a big notice that copyright violations will be pursued to full
extant of the law. That way if you catch them they can't say they didn't
know it was illegal to steal it. Using Flash somewhat discourages the "right
click/ save picture as". And use the watermark. None of it is perfect
protection and can be defeated by those who would do it.
Those who will steal will do it by screen capture anyway.

| Flash doesnt protect anything, just check out your internet cache and you'll
find it already there.
Protecting your copyright is expensive and you have to prove how you were
actually damaged...a tough fight.
Watermark & low res images is about all you can do.

There probably isn't any way to keep people from copying if they really want
to, as others here have pointed out. Just as you can't keep a really
determined thief from breaking into your home. But making either type of
theft more difficult will discourage most of the "amateurs."
For individual images you can break them up into two or more pieces
(preferably more). Most imaging/graphics programs have a feature that does
this or you can format it yourself. Essentially what you're doing is taking
an image, cutting it into fourths (eighths, etc.) and then placing them in
order in a table with no padding or spacing. A program I like (and use
frequently) is Picture Dicer by Shoe String Projects. Very easy to use. It's
even free :-). See http://www.ziplink.net/~shoestring/dicer01.htm
When someone does a right-click/save they will download an image ... but
only that piece of the image. Generally by the time people get around to
opening the image file that they've saved and see that it's just a piece of
the whole picture they forget where they "stole" it from and don't go back
for the rest of the image (or they figure they made a mistake or whatever).
It's not fool-proof: users who realize it's a table can still save the
entire page with images and fuss with it locally. But again, most amateurs
aren't going to bother (or aren't going to know how).
I used to see my images all over the place. People who emailed me and asked
me to swap links were actually using my images! (Does "web gall" have any
limits?) Dicing up the images has really "cut" (sorry) the amount of theft
significantly.
I have no connection except as a very grateful user. - JPB

| You're talking about copyable data here, not single items in your house. How
do you think things like colds get spread around? Everyone gets it from the
same person?
Advising anyone that anything they can do will protect their published
intellectual property in any way is just plain wrong. It only gives ignorant
people false hope. And false hope is no hope at all.
Remember that the next time you listen to an MP3 you got from some friend
who got a copy from another friend who downloaded it from somewhere on the
web.
