Author How to disable "view source" in Internet Explorer
Doug VanOrnum

Is it possible to prevent someone from viewing/copying your html source in
their browser -- at least from the casual surfer? I know it can't be
prevented from anyone who is determined.
Steve Easton

No.
However, why do want to do this, html is html !!

No.
Why would you want to hide it from the "casual surfer" anyway? Even if
they by accident came to look at the source they wouldn't know what to
do with it.

Check out this site. www.lookoutvalleyranch.com. Don't know what program
was used to design site, but you can't view the source on it.

Go that site and click on View, Source in your browser. Bingo!

Think about what is desired here. You open FrontPage and create a table by
going to Insert, Table. Now you want to keep anyone else from seeing how
you did that when all they have to do is choose Insert, Table and they get
the same thing!

The point is that HTML is not source code. It is simply markup. There is
nothing proprietary about it.

Therein is the proof that such tactics do dissuade the casual surfer.
However, if you click the View menu and choose Source, you will see the

It's quite amazing that one can learn so much and yet know almost nothing at
all! :) The Internet is so vast that no one can possibly understand it

I know that most everyone has said NO to your question.
Here's a different perspective.
A) As you've seen from that horse page, you can do something simple like
prevent RIGHT MOUSE CLICKs to help disuade someone from viewing your
source. As you've also seen, it won't prevent anyone beyond the novice
user.
B) You can use something like PHP to create your pages. The source code
in the PHP file get's stripped out by the HTTP server before it gets
sent to the persons browser. All they are left with is the HTML (markup
text).

Not sure if B) is really what you are trying to accomplish, but, if so,
there you have it :-)

Note: When using any server side script, if you create a link to a page and forget to include the
file extension, users of Windows XP SP2 and recent security updates to Outlook Express, will be able
to see the complete source of the page.

Disabling right-click is a sure sign of an amateur site, and drives traffic
away from the site, not to mention that it doesn't prevent jack. This kind
of advice is one resaon why we never seem to stop being deluged with
questions on this topic.

In addition, using PHP isn't going to prevent anyone from seeing his HTML
source code, which is what he asked about. All it would do is ADD
server-side code for no good reason...

If you want to hide the html from a casual observer, consider filling the
start of the html document with white space and hope that they would not
scroll down. From a casual view, it would appear that the document is blank.

If they want your site badly enough, all they need to do is go file save as
and save the document, then open it in notepad or frontpage or whatever
editor they choose.

Besides it is already downloaded when they view it.
