Author drop-down menu

Time to start over. I've already created a drop down menu using layers,
autoshapes (for background fill effects), and tables. I can't get them to
disappear on mouse out like I'd like, so I've decided to start over.

What I'm trying to accomplish is a menu much like the navigation menu on the
left of this site. I will be placing it horizontally across the top of the
page, rather than vertically.

Can anyone give me any instruction as to how to create this? I don't need
to know how to create the gray highlighted rollover effect as on this site.
I plan to highlight the text on rollover instead. It's the structure that
I'm interested in.

I've been working on this for too long and just need to create something
that works, so any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
