Author Missing AUthor.exe File

Hi, I am running FrontPage 2003. I am trying to publish my site from my
computer to my comcast site. I have already asked them about this problem
and said its a microsoft issue, and to deal with them.

Whenever I click the "Publish Web site" button, I always get the same error
message:
404 Not Found
Not Found The requested URL /~kj_bennett/_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe
was not found on this server. Apache/1.3.27 Server at home.comcast.net Port
80

This also happens if I select more then one file manually to publish to the
Comcast site. Frontpage 2003 extensions are enabled, and I just purchased
this software, so I doubt it could have gone defective, and it seems many
other people have had the same problem.

My website is up and running, but I seem to not be able to submit forms,
which is a major part of my website. Thank you.

is your server running the server extensions? if not, you won't be able to
publish via the http: method and this accounts for why you can't send form data.

I presume Apache/1.3.27 server refers to a unix/linux server - for which server
extensions are available but not to the same extent as for windows.

Yes, it is running FrontPage 2003 extensions.

FP2003 extensions do not exist, anywhere. Your site does not appear to have
any version of FrontPage extensions.

I am subscribed as to having FrontPage Server Extensions for my website. I
have also looked in to the site through comcast itself and I see the _vti_cnf
folder. How else would I go about getting this to work then if comcast's
site says I am subscribed, and you said I don't. Of course this is only a
temporary site until the real site can be uploaded to , so hopefully I won't
have to go through this twice.

Look for a file named _vti_inf.html

It should display when this link is clicked
http://home.comcast.net/~kj_bennett/_vti_inf.html

if it doesn't, extensions are *not* installed

You must enable FrontPage Extensions on Comcast
------------------------------------------------------
Personal Web Page Profile for *******
Once you have enabled Personal Web Pages in Account Management, you can begin creating your
Personal Web Page. There are many additional features available to add to you Personal Web
Pages. Please sign up for any of the features listed below. The number next to each feature
reflects the amount of allotted space required.

Important! You can make changes as often as you like. Un-subscribing from a site feature
permanently deletes the feature and all content related to it.

You currently have 25597 KB of storage space left

Guest Book (100 KB): Yes No
Calendar (100 KB): Yes No
Address List (50 KB): Yes No
Newsletter (300 KB): Yes No
Mailform (200 KB): Yes No
Polls (250 KB): Yes No
Web Site Builder* (300 KB): Yes No
Microsoft FrontPageŽ Server Extensions** (500 KB): Yes No
----------------------------------------
What server-based FrontPage features are supported on my site?
Authoring FrontPage Webs:
Publish Web
Maintain Web (rename, move, delete files)
Index Web (for Web Search)

Browse-time FrontPage Web Functionality:
Hit Counter
Web Search Form
Save Form Results to File
Discussion Form Handler (Disk-based Discussion Webs)
Photo Gallery

Please note that most FrontPage features are not server-based. Rather, they are features
implemented:
by the FrontPage client at Publish time (e.g., Table of Contents)
using client side scripting (JavaScript, VBScript)
by client-side Java Applets or ActiveX controls
or by some combination of the above.

Are all server-based FrontPage features supported on my site?
Some of the FrontPage features require hosting on a Microsoft Windows environment. Because of
this the following features are not available on our UNIX servers:
Active Server Pages (ASP)
ODBC and SQL Database connections (Access, SQL Server)
Server-side ActiveX
Server-side Scripting (VBScript)

We also do not support the following features:
Administering FrontPage Webs
Save Results to E-mail
File Upload
Top 10 List
Personal or per-site Usage Logs

Where do my form results end up?
They end up in a file in your https://home.comcast.net/~username/_private/ directory (where
username is your e-mail username). This directory is only available over SSL (note the
'https:') and requires your e-mail username and e-mail password to access its contents.

What are all these _vti_cnf directories?
Do their contents count against my disk space usage?
FrontPage makes those directories to help it synchronize and track dependencies between files.
Yes, their contents count against your disk space usage.

Note that these are never served up by the web servers, so no one can see their contents but
you.
