Is there a way of preventing the html layout from being
viewed when selecting "Source" from the View menu?

This isn't something I'm desperate to do, just curiosity,
as I noticed when selecting to view the source on a
particular site one day, that I was greeted with a
dialogue box saying it was copyrighted.

Thanks

Not possible, all you have to do is use the Browser's View Source in the menu, instead of using
right click.

No. Not possible. The source is downloaded to the user's computer to be
rendered. Therefore they can always get it, should they want it.

What you saw was a lame javascript attempt that fools only the stupidest of
users. Anybody doing serious HTML work will know how to get around it...
therefore anybody that wants to copy your code can easily... and the script
just annoys regular users without helping anything.

What sort of freaking Picasso these "script hiders" think they are I don't
know. It's just crap-XXX HTML and 99% of the time, not worth hiding.

Not really. The dialog you saw is a simple JavaScript that fires, usually
when someone right-clicks on a web page. There isnt' a lot you can really do
to protect code as the browser has to be able to view it in order to render
the page, and almost any encryption mechanism ends up buggering the browser
in the process.

Hope this helps,

How in the world can you "copyright" html????

If they had created something new and unique, it wouldn't render in a browser. Think about it.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to that site would you??

Hi Nick,

There is a method to accomplish it but the time required to build a page, etc. is not worth the effort.

Actually, Steve, while you can't copyright HTML, you CAN copyright an HTML
document. However, you certainly can NOT copy-protect it!

I saw a page that produced a dialogue box saying it was copyrighted but
when you paged down about six inches the source was there.

Read the post "Disabling Right Click" :....same topic, same question as yours.

There are ways around those no right click scripts - they are not full proof.

Copyrighting and copy-protecting are 2 entirely different things. One is a
legal ownership of a document. The other is preventing the copying of it. Of
course, since the browser downloads a COPY of it, you certainly cannot
prevent that.
