Author Newbie Shopping Cart Question

I have just converted to Frontpage 2003 from Publisher (yes!). I am setting up a commercial site (for myself) and am totally clueless as to how I am going to get a shopping cart set up and running. Do I build the site and somehow add the shopping cart
to the site on the server or is there a way I can install the cart before I upload?

depends on if you accept payments over the internet, i.e. you'll need a secure
connection for sensitive information - only something your host or ISP can
configure. I believe there is an add-in from Microsoft (under the Insert Web
components options - select under the 'b-central components' option -
Microsoft/Hotmail/MSN run a feature which is an ecommerce type application (they
host it, it would cost you a few dollars a year).

You just sign up for a hotmail/msn passport account and you're in.

Otherwise there are ASP applications which deal with e-commerce, shopping carts
etc.

If you want to integrate the shopping cart into your site then I suggest an ASP
application, or if you just want a facility that is your shopping cart and don't
mind if it fits your site design or not, one of the hosted ones might do - if you
pay for it, then you have the advertising and what have you removed, that you
would find on the 'free' ones.

have a look at www.hotscripts.com and search under (for whatever host you have)
perl, php, asp, .net, aspx etc for 'shopping cart' or 'ecommerce' to find some
examples of scripts you could try out.

www.duware.com has a free shopping cart product (as welll as a pay-for version)
that integrates with a PayPal account.

I don't know your level of skill in regards to web development (or e-commerce) -
sounds like you're a novice or beginner, so it would be worth researching the
topic a bit first.

Thanks for this info! IS there somewhere I can go and learn about how shopping carts work?

It depends on the particular shopping cart.

Good stuff, Always something new to learn.

Tell me, does one build the web site and then apply an item inventory number to a shopping cart's "data base" or something similar to that?

It really depends, the best approach is to populate the database, then retrieve the data on your
pages, so that you don't have to modify individual pages, just to change or add products or change
pricing, etc.
