There are some good tutorials on making your flash files fill the browser window, but if you don't want to go through the trouble, 800x600 is generally a size that should work for anybody.

800x600 will be "standard" for some time I would think, even with bigger displays on the market.

for a webpage? if you are targeting user who have screen resolution 800x600,
remember dont use 800x600, if you didn't set the body tag margin to 0, then
760x420 is recommended, after deduct the size taken by title bar, menu bar,
scrollbars, etc.

if you set the body tag margin to 0, then you can use maximum 779px width, for
user who have screen resolution 800x600.

for stage height, there is no any height that can suit everybody, remember,
some user's web browser installed with those yahoo bar google bar msn bar blah
blah blah, while some other users don't.

Another way is to set the swf size in your html to percent, e.g. 100%x100%, to
make it scalable.

This is a question with no real answer. To me I always think of what I want to
display in my flash and what would be a proper size in pixels in order to do
that. After making the actual animation, end-user resolutions need to be
considered. I guess a good answer(not always but in most cases) like ggshow
said wiil be 800X600.
