Author Timelines under masks

I have several MCs under a mask. A few of them have timelines inside of
them, and that seems to cause problems. If I put a stop on the first
frame all is fine, but otherwise the mess up the mask in a weird way, I
don't even know how to describe. Anyone have experience with this?
