| As it stands right now your editing a symbol which has multiple instances by
the sound of it. I think this catches everyone out at first. You need to
duplicate the symbol and give it a unique name in the library. Changes made
to this symbol will not affect other symbols.
I would usually copy/paste the symbol, then right click the new symbol and
select duplicate symbol from the dropdown menu (or Modify / Symbol /
Duplicate Symbol). Give this a unique name and there you have it - 2
symbols, each with a unique name in the library.

Duplicate it in the library, then work on the duplicate. It's a whole new object then. If the movieclip contains other movieclips
you will need to duplicate those too if you want to modify them. Use the swap button to change clips inside the new one.
