Rollover Movie Clip----Getting Remote Text to Appear

I am trying to set up a page with multiple movie clips.
When rolling over each clip a description needs to appear at the bottom
of the page.

I know how to do this with buttons rather than mc's :
(create a dynamic text box. In the Var field for the box enter "status"

//then the mc in question has this actionscript:
on(rollOver) {
status = "the text I want to appear"
}

But can I also do this with a mc??? What actionscript do I need?
I have tried invisible buttons, but the mc's each have another rollover
effect that is lost when I add a button above it.
