When I use version 6 (MX) to open a version 7 file it gives me an
error message.."unexpected file format" but when I open a version 8
file it usually just crashes as you described. If the file is version
8 and you have version 7 (MX2004), have them save the fla as a version
7 fla for you. (If they are using version 8 specific features it
won't work right anymore though after you change it)
Also, version 7 was famous for corrupting fla files so that they could
no longer be opened.
