Author Cannot get my button link to work

Anyone that knows:

I am a newbie to Flash. I have tried many times to add a link to my buttons in
Macromedia Professional. I create an Actions layer and go to the Properties
window for that button and I enter a link and it is saved in the properties
window. But when I run a test of my file, the button does nothing when I click
on it. The test link I use is http://www.google.com, so I know the link works
by itself. What have I not done?

hello,
well first of all after you create your button add an instance name to it, you
can find the box for the isntance name in the property panel, top left. lets
call it name_btn . then select the keyframe on which is your button, or
add another keyframe at the same frame number as that one. after you select it
press F9 (should open the action panel, if it's not already opened). and in
that panel type the code below:

name_btn.onRelease = function() {
getURL("www.google.com");
}

for other optins for the getURL function see livedocs . i hope you
understand.. if it doesn't work, let me know.

property box righ at the buttom of the stage.. then.. add the actions.. if you
want i can make some print screens so you can understand better.

Aurelian,

I tried what you said. I click on my Button in my library to get its name to
show at the top of my Layer Panel, click on the layer showing that has a
rectangle in it, pressed F9. But when I see the Actions panel, I see the
message: Current selection cannot have actions applied to it. What did I not
do?

I was able to do what you just said. I can select the button and I can add the
actions. But when I do a test of the movie, the button still will not do
anything when I click on it. I should not have to save my changes just to do a
test, right?
Can I email you my .fla file? That way you can look at it and even change it
if you like and email it back to me. Let me know your email address?

Aurelian,

I emailed you another fla file. It is the almost same as the first one I sent
to you, but this one only displays the 4 pics, which is all I want to show for
this file. My problem is that the pics are 600 pixels wide and 400 pix high,
but they are not lined up with the white background on the stage. A couple of
them are cut off when you test the movie. What I want is for the movie to show
the entire picture of each one, and NO white background at all. In other
words, I want the stage background to exactly equal the size of the pics in
Layer 1. How do I change the scaling to exactly fit the pics? I just want
changing pics on my website from this file.

Go ahead and make your corrections and send the fla file back to me, and tell
me how you adjusted the scaling of the background.

THANKS

Doug
