Author Controlling main timeline from buttons in loaded movie

I'm going to assume that this is very much possible.

My mainMovie.swf loads a banner.swf into a container (banner_mc) on the main
stage. Can I put buttons inside the banner.swf that control elements of the
main movie that banner.swf is loaded into?

I'd like to try loading another movie into another container (main_mc) using
one of the buttons on this banner.swf. Can someone help me with the syntax for
the onrelease() attached to the buttons? Could it be as simple as:

on (release) {main_mc.loadMovie("movie.swf");
}

or do I need something that identifies the main movie time-line such as root
before the buttons will be able to communicate correctly?
