movie clips not working when dragged onto main stage

hi all -

i want to make a navigation bar that fades in when the user opens the web
page. in the .fla file i made a movie clip which contains a graphic which
tweens from an alpha of zero % to 100% over 10 frames. when i move the play
head in the movieclip, the graphic fades in the way it should. but when i drag
the movieclip into the first frame of layer 1 of the main document and do a
control-test movie, nothing happens. the graphic doesn't fade in.

this may be an inane question, but shouldn't that movie clip play
automatically?

or do i need to put a start(); in the first frame of the movie clip before i
drag it onto the main stage?

Yes, it should play automatically without any start command unless you
have a stop command in it.

Don't know why it's doing this but if you can't figure it out use the Loader component in frame one... that should boot it off ok as a way round it.
