Hello:
I need to create a splash page where one letter in the text animates like a
cartoon character then changes back into a letter. Can I convert text to vector
graphics so I can manipulate the nodes? If that is not the way to do it, what
should I do?

select your text, click modify - Break apart (or ctrl + B) twice.
