Website source files

| Wondering what the protocol is for giving up the source files to a client. I
developed/designed a site at a reduced rate. Now, client wants to take source
files and go elsewhere. Nothing in contract regarding source files. Do I have a
right to withhold or charge for said source files? Client is withholding small
nominal payment still owed until they get these files. Any help or opinions
appreciated.
cheers!

| Usually you have to give these files unless you specify you're not going to
give them over in your contract since you are working as "work for hire." I
think legally they may have you, but I would make them compensate me for the
rest that they owe me plus time lost by working on their project before I
actually gave them anything.

| I've never heard of that being usual anywhere .. the usual is that unless it
is contracted for you to supply the solution AND the source, you only
provide the finished solution.
