Author White Box Before Flash Movie Load

I've got an html page with two flash movies. The browser window shows two white
boxes, each the size of the two movies instantly before loading the movies
themselves. Is this avoidable, please? http://hoopsamerica.ushoops.com

Please do a search before posting. I did a simple search for the word "white"
in the Forums Search, and the answer is on the second result and even more.

Thanks for responding. I read 8 pages of messages before I posted. The response
to your search, though appreciated, didn't solve the problem for me, as my
flash movies have black backgrounds. After your post I did three searches, but
was unable to get the result you got. I got other things from the new messages
and archives.

Thanks, though.

I have done it using this code for my site.

<param name="BGCOLOR" value="#000000">

<param name="wmode" value="transparent">

Thank you merlinvicki, for helping me with this issue. Following up on your
tip, I googled wmode, and found that putting the transparent value for wmode in
the embed tags caused the white boxes to disappear on my page. I appreciate
your help very much. (Thanks to NSurveyor also.)

adding transparency is not the best fix for this - it is buggy and not
cross-browser compatible and there's no good reason to add a layer of
transparency when it's not needed. The best approach is to add this to
your html:

<param name="BGCOLOR" value="#000000">

If you choose to use transparency your movie will not be viewed
consistently in all browsers and you may see a substantial performance
hit during playback.

Thank you. You know, I did get a performance hit on Safari, using transparent
in the embed tag, but it removed the white box. When I had added <param
name="BGCOLOR" value="#000000"> previously, it didn't remove the white box for
me. It only disappeared when I added transparent to the embed tag. Just a note:
My flash movie's background is black.
It's at <http://hoopsamerica.ushoops.com>.

Hi Gary,
I dont have the Safari browser but I'm using the wmode=transparent mode. Can u check for any errors if u have some time.
Thanks

Yes, sure. Your site is displaying a white box for 2-3 seconds in Safari (Mac
OS X) with a broadband (cable) connection. For me, using wmode="transparent" in
the embed tag removed the white box, but as was remarked by Chris Georgenes in
this thread, it may well have caused a slowdown in Safari, so I'm going to
continue to search for a better solution, as the params didn't remove the white
boxes on my page.

Yours is a nice looking site.

make sure you are clearing your cache when testing - you may be viewing
a cached version without the param value.

Thanks, Chris. Yes, I'm cleaning the cache, deleting the history, quitting and
restarting the browser. I just took the code out of the embed tag to test your
assertion that there may be a performance hit (which there was). You're right.
My speed is back up, but so are the white boxes.

Be careful about Netscape, Firefox and Opera, though. If you care, the
transparent mode is not supported by those browsers. AFAIK.
