Author Why is flash distorting my instanced symbols?

I am having a problem with my graphics being distorted after I test my flash
movies. While I'm in editing mode everything looks great. When I test my movie
however many of my instances look like they have been stretched or sqashed, and
many of them arent in the precise location where they are on the stage during
authoring! I'm not exactly certain what is happening here. I have noticed that
this tends to occur more often with symbols that are embedded within movie
clips. I thought this may be due to importing certain graphic formats, but the
problem also happens with shapes created using only flash. Any suggestions?
Thanks!:confused;
