Hi,

I'm looking for a program which would make it possible to animate a sketch in
the way displayed at this webpage: http://fcmx.net/vec/v.php?i=003702 and
export it as a .swf, or even better, a .fla file.
I have looked around but haven't really found a suitable program.

If anybody could give me a name, I would greatly appreciate it!

lander222,

I tried to scratch your back since you scratched mine in my post, but
unfortunately I'm coming up empty. I have no idea what program would do that. I
must say, that is one of the most interesting Flash animations I've seen in
quite some time!

You can do this in Flash (but it may take some time!)

1. You can put your sketch (or words) in a keyframe
2. Then do frame by frame animation.
3. select the eraser tool
4. select your first frame
5. erase a small bit
6. select frame 2
7. insert keyframe
8. erase a small bit
9. repeat the process until nothing is left.
10. Select all the frames and reverse them
11. preview and watch it draw.
12. Tell me how it went!

For those who are interested, I seem to have found a way to do this.

1.Scan a picture
2. use adobe illustrator to convert the picture to paths (vectorlines).
3. use a .js script in ai to extract the coordinates of the pathpoints.
4. in flash, use these coordinates to draw the lines.

a bit problematic that illustrator uses cubic beziers and flash quadric but
there exist ways to approximate the one with the other by slicing it into
smaller bits.

If you want to avoid the frame by frame erasing and/or coding it. I do know
After Effects has a feature where it will record
brush marks or anything you do with the drawing tools. You would have to use a
stylus pad like Wacom and trace an image or a drawing. Then you can export as
quicktime or convert to frame by frame jpegs or tiff. Then if you want it to
be vector you could manually convert each frame with trace bitmap in Flash. I
personally think the coding is the best way to go. You could check out Flash
Math Creativity 1 or 2 books i think there is a tutorial on how to input
coordinates for line
drawings. I know there is something on just drawing random pattern sketches
with code.

Did you ever find a solution to your sketch drawing? I'm looking for the same solution. Your help would be appriciated and rewarded :).

Thanks

well, using the technique I described a few months earlier, I have accomplished
this ( http://users.pandora.be/kunst/varia/page.swf , the drawing is just
something i scanned ). the big problem is that it only draws straight lines
(you can see that the apples are not quite what they should be).

Well, this is a similar style we did a while back -
http://www.seasidefl.com/wPostcard.asp

Basically, what you have to do is create a custom key stroke that automtically
adds a keyframe (or I think the default is F6). you simply draw a line, then
hit the key(s) adding another keyframe as you go. so, the drawing and lines
progress keyframe by keyframe. This gives the illusion that the scene is
drawing itself.

You can even have a photo on a locked layer behind it that you trace, then
just delete the layer when you're done.

Does this help?

Let me know if you still need one.
