Author Actions--breaking up is hard to do.

Hello,

I'm certain this is simple and done daily.

I've converted static text into a graphic symbol. I've broken it up into its
constituent letters; then distributed each letter to its own layer. NOW I
want to apply an action to each letter. Just fade in each one by changing its
alpha value.

One solution, I guess, is to convert each letter into an MC then use
setProperty to change the alpha value. But .this seems crazy; it's a big text,
relatively.

Thanks in advance for ideas and instruction.

I guess one way you could do it is have a movie clip with a dynamic textfield
that you fade as required. Then you can duplicate, place, set the proper
letter, and start fading for each letter in your text.

Another way would be to do a mass fade of the entire string with a transparent
gradient veil moving over the top of it.

Another way would be to buy SWISH.

Or continue on your present path, expand each letter to its own layer and
motion tween.

Thanks Pete,

Good suggestions all.

I started with the mass fade via transparent gradient (sounds like a name of a
band, no?), but what a pain, since letters fade in out of sequence.

In the end( I made each letter its own graphic symbol and created a motion
tween for each. Time consuming, but with good effect.

Swish. I wish I thought and knew.

Best,

with Flash everything is hard to do.
Use swishmax , create a text and then add an effect to it like 3Dwave or
Transform or whatever.
Flash is to complicated to be a fast solution for your website. Meaning you
spend too much time programming with it.

seems you dont know what you are talking about :)
Try swishmax, and you will see that you can use the entire action script with
swishmax as given in the macromedia actionscript dictionary.
So you can do Everything with swishmax what you can do with Flash, only
Swishmax is easier to handle, and its cheaper.
Do you want to start now discussiong Flashplayer bugs which have been in the
Flashplayer since adam and eve and macromedia did not even bother to remove
them?

Believe me I'm well aware of how buggy Flash is. I'm no MM evangelist. I
don't actually use swishMAX, but a look at it's documentation suggests:

No support for arrays!?
No attachMovie
No createEmptyMovieClip
No createTextField
Not truly OO - doesn't seem like you can extend the built in objects?
No hitTest
No drawing API
No dynamic masking
No tabIndex or tabEnabled

....shall i go on;-?

I'm not just being picky here - these are all features of Flash i find
invaluable and use on a daily basis.

If i'm wrong on any of these points, i'm sure you'll me know...

Cheers,
