Frustrating Performance--text fading in a MC

The application I'm building is pretty straightforward and pretty
common: a gallery of images; on an event, a scrim fades over the
image, and text--a caption--fades over the scrim. It's a museum thing.

The scrims and text, one for each image, are each held in a separate
MC; the scrim sits in one layer, the text in a second. An "actions"
layer has stop();'s in appropriate frames. A button controls each MC.

The scrims work well alone, fading smoothly over each image. But once
text is added, the whole project seems to stall: the fades are slow
slow slow to the point of stalling out.

I'm grateful for ideas or instruction.
