Author Using a mask in a button problem

I would like to make a button in Flash MX. The button consists of a graphic
symbol that has a mask in it. When I look at this button in the timeline it
appears normal. But when i publish, the mask and image break apart into their
separate pieces. Am I not able to do this? Is the only way to accomplish this
is to build the whole thing inside the button?
