Author target= New Tab?

Is there a way to target a link to open a new tab (in browsers that have tabs)?

Thanks

Add this to your link code:
target="_blank"
It will open a new browser window/tab.

That opens a new window. Is there anyway to specifically open a new tab?

That's what a "tab" in FF, Opera, etc is. It's a new window. Those browsers just recognized that people were tired of looking at several instances of the browser.

target="_blank" still opens a new window in FF, Opera and Safar.

Tabs are not HTML. They're a browser function of an alternative way of
opening a new window. Hence, you can't specify tabs via target.

I don't know what to tell you then. It's always worked for me. I only have MSIE
at this office (company won't let me install a "real" browser) so I can't
double check anything in FF or Opera right now. Like I said though, it's always
opened a new tab any time I've used it. Have you checked your browsers'
settings? Also, you could always go to a site that does what you want and look
at the code and figure it out....

As Bruce says, a tab is just another window. Whether a new window opens as a
tab, or as a new instance of the browser is entirely up to the
end-user...not you.

And, some (like me) would argue whether or not a link even opens in a new
window should be left up to the end-user.

In Firefox, you can specify that links that force new windows open in a
new tab. Tools->Options->Tabs.

Or disable it and force links to always open in the same window ...

I don't know if this thread is still open, but try this:

target="_blank" target-new="tab"
