I know PHP pretty well, and I am looking into a project that involves a site
with ASP.net framework on the back end.

My questions are:

1) Is ASP.net completely different from PHP? Is ASP.net pretty easy to learn??
Also, is MSSQL similar to MySQL?

thanks

1. Yes.
2. It has a reputation for a relatively steep learning curve, although
Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 automates a lot for you. Knowledge
of another language, like PHP, should make the learning curve easier.
3. Similar, but not the same.

Disclaimer: my experience with ASP.NET is close to zero. However, you
will find a lot of online resources provided by Microsoft to get you
kick-started with ASP.NET:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/e...ng/default.aspx

My first impressions of working with ASP.NET are that it seems very
powerful, and that one of its great attractions is that the Microsoft
IDE automates a lot of things for you, such as building drop-down menus,
form elements, and so on. That's very useful, but watching some of the
training videos, I've been alarmed at the number of dialog boxes you
need to wade through. One reason I abandoned ASP is because I found it
so verbose. ASP.NET seems to be even more so, but maybe that's only an
initial impression.

One thing you need to be aware of is the difference between ASP.NET 1.1
and 2.0. The newer version is said to be greatly improved, but I've
noticed that a lot of hosts still offer only the 1.1 framework.

That offer is available in North America only, and is available until
mid-April. To qualify, you must watch three training videos.

The really annoying thing is that you can't even watch the videos
outside North America. You need to register, even if you say you don't
want the free software, but the online form won't accept any country
except USA or Canada.

I find that so annoying, or telephone number forms that are configured
to only accept 3-digit area codes. (I hope you point these things out
when you instruct us on constructing databases, David?) And don't get
me started ranting about Napster having different music available to UK
and US customers! >-(

My appologies, guess I need to get new glasses as I didn't see the fine
print. I knew about attending the webcasts, live or on-demand. Wasn't aware
of the US only thing. Maybe after April MS will open up the webcasts to
everyone?
