Ala

Thank you again for replying ??sorry I didn't reply earlier but I've been
having real problems accessing the forum this week

I've tried your suggestion of using a 'Site Root URL' based on what I would
enter into a browser i.e. http://www.mysite.co.uk without any success

I'm going to have a good look around the forums to see if I'm missing
something really simple

I'm having exacly the same problem

and now I look like a right twit coz I have sold my client on how great
contribute and dreamweaver are and we cant even connect to the remote site

also, I tried to export my settings out of dreamweaver so that they could be
used in contribute but the file isnt excepted by contriubute

Me three.

From Dreamweaver I can post all the pages I want to, it connects fine. But it
will not connect when I try to Administer the Site in Contribute. The Test
connection fails too. Just before the error message comes up there is a flash
of "putting ??????????", it goes back to fast to read the details. The site
root URL is correct.

Has anyone solved this? I too sold a client that Configure was the ideal
solution, and now I will probably have to refund their money since if I cannot
connect we will need to find something that works.

Hello everyone!
I'm trying to decide if Contribute would be the right tool for a new client
and I've browsed around the DW and CT forums.

It seems that many threads end up in a question mark (this one seems to be
unresolved since 1 month).
This makes me worry - are there really so many problems w/ this product?

Extreme slowness is something I've seen complained about a lot. I wouldn't
want to recommend (and use) a product that's not working as promised.

Please give me your educated opinions and all-level experiences on this
subject, thank you!

I have only one CT user and she is extremely happy with it. It's a
relatively small site, so that may be a contributing factor. I will say
that the check-in/check-out process slows things a bit and made it a bit
of a pain for me to work on the site in Dreamweaver. I wound up chopping
out the portions of the site that I tended to work on and put them in
include files. That made things 100% better.

As far as the problem in this thread, all I can say is that I've not
encountered it. Once the site is set up, there should be little if any
need for you to use Contribute. The only thing I used it for was to
generate the connection file for the Contribute user. After that, I do
everything in Dreamweaver and have had no problems connecting to the
site.

Thanks for the input Gary!
I must say, I'm a bit surprised that there aren't more people "standing up"
for CT. As I mentioned before, there are a lot of CT threads ending without
answers.
I may seem a bit insistent here, but only trying to gather as much information
as possible for my decision and hoping for more replys!

two reasons for the slowness-

In contrib}te: the user downloads a copy of Everything on the page when
they click the Edit button... And when they Publish, they upload Everything
again, and make .new and .bak files so that 'rollback' will work.

In dreamweaver: The checkin/checkout can slow the work flow

the reading/refreshing of design notes can make Dw sluggish when coming back
to site window after being in another application (disabling refresh local
site might help this)

and when checking in the site- there can be a(lot of FTP 'churn' to make the
*.new and .bak files for the rollbacks. This can be cut down by lowering the
number of rollbacks available, or by turnino rollback off.

You're welcome. I think gathering input from users is a valuable part of
the decision making process. Remember that in simply reading posts, you
are very likely to see people who have problems. The ones that are happy
usually don't have anything to post. :-)

Gary, you're right of course, the forum is mainly for problem solving. However,
it seems to me that many of the CT questions go unanswered where as questions
about DW's functioning can usually be explained.

Alan's reply clarifies a lot. But it's not comforting that the slowness is due
to useful features of the 2 programs (rollback, check-out/in) that one would
expect to be able to use. I don't know, I'm not convinced, as of yet anyhow.

Thanks to both of you for taking time to explain this to me!

No problem. You're welcome. You may know this already, but there are three
forums dedicated specifically to Contribute. You may get a better picture in
one of those.

hi there,

did you ever come up with a solution for administering your site?

I am in the same situation!

I keep getting error messages that Dreamweaver cannot make a connection to the
server, although I can connect using Dreamweaver FTP without a problem...

thanks,

HELP!
Alan

Which version of dreamweaver?

MX 6.1?

reasonable guess on what's wrong and how to fix-

Open that site's site definiton.
Click the Advanced tab at top of site wizard dialog box.

click the Contribute tab on left.

Check the SITE ROOT URL.
That should be the url to get to your site.
http://mydomain.com/
or
http://myhost.com/mysite/

If it's wrong, fix it.

Dreamweaver guesses at what it should be, based on your remote ftp info.
If your ftp address thru your host's domain like server.host.com/~username
then dw will guess wrong.

Hello KC8

I'd be very interested to hear if Alan's idea solves this problem for you as
if I have tried it without success, and if it works for you it means I need to
look elsewhere for the solution.

Does anyone from Macromedia read these forums as this sounds like a problem
they should be addressing?

Regards,

Christian

There are contribute specific forums- one is just for connection issues.
Go to the main forum page, or the Groups listing if using a Newsreader.

On MM people reading the forums- this is a Peer-to-Peer help forum.
Although, in the contribute forum mm seems to have their people in helping
quite often- including the product manager and others on the contribute
team.

On solving your problem- I don't have enough info to go on.

A suggestion, if you'd be comfortable with it-

If you'd share the ftp info with me for this site, I'll set it up and see if
there are any issues, then send you what goes in what box.
If your comfortable with that-
Don't reply to this message with the ftp info!
Send direct to blu at formdude.com
I'm not a macromedia employee- i have been helping out in here for years
though

EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!
I'm having the same problem. - Same Error.
"Dreamweaver could not find a page at the specified site root URL. Please
check the site root URL"
Seems like a very common problem.

So what's the answer, MM?

Hi There

2004-09-09, 7:20 pm

Same problem here. I was just about to make a large purchase of Contribute for
our college campus, then downloaded a 30 day trial just to make sure it's going
to work.

I can't connect to any sites with Contribute 3, much less set up Contribute
compatibility in Dreamweaver MX 2004's advanced site definitions... SAME
errors. And yes, I have entered the stinkin' site root URL as it would be
entered in a browser... but after doing so I also get:

"Dreamweaver could not connect to the remote server. You cannot perform
Contribute administration tasks without a connection to a remote server. Please
fixt the remote connection before continuing."

For crying out loud, Dreamweaver IS connecting! The remote connection
settings I have in Dreamweaver have been working for me for years. I thought
Contribute was supposed to simplify things, but evidently not.

I am having the same trouble. I can get CT to work on my regular website, but when I try to use it to connect to my asp site,
I get the same error. Please help!
