Dear friends,

I realize my question here is a bit outside the scope of DW but because the
image that I will refer to is ultimately to be used in DW here it goes: Even
before I optimize an image, how can I reduce its unecessarily large dimensions
without loosing dramatically the quality? The original Is nearly 10 x bigger
than the size necessary for the web page but everytime I try to shrink it in
Photoshop, menu image size, the outcome is awful. Can somebody please shed a
light on this for me?

Thanks a million
Johnny

Use PS's filters to sharpen the image. Reduce it to half its height/width.
Sharpen, and reduce by half again. Rinse, lather, and repeat.

Use unsharp mask and resample.

The first thing I do in Photoshop is reduce the image resolution to 72
pixels/inch (Image/Image size). There's no point in it being any greater
because that's all anybody will see on the internet.
Before anything else I put in the size I want to use (say 500px wide) and
OK. Then I use File/Save for web. You can play with the settings. The image
shouldn't be above 35kb (I may well be taken up on that one). You can use
4-up to see some different results. If you're using PSP the actions are very
similar but I haven't used it in a while and can't remember exactly.
Please note I said this is what *I* do, there may be other and better ways.
One thing worth remembering - Have your originals in, say, My Pictures, and
save the reduced ones to your DW images folder!

What type of file are you trying to reduce?
If you are starting with a .gif, they downsize horribly unless you switch your
Image...Mode to RGB.
The advice about switching to 72 dpi first is essential also.
Hope this helps.

Interesting. Is it *really* better to sharpen first? I've always felt
i got better results when I reduce img size (with Resampling) leaving
all the information in the image, and only then sharpen. Have
I been deluding myself?

Works better that way for me, Michael - those images on the fairfaxboulevard
site were all downsized from about 2048px and they look OK.

Huh? GIF images downsize horribly?

DPI makes no difference on the web....

My old teacher was adamant about the 72ppi and not being able to see in
higher res. I admit I've been wondering lately, and tried your 50% way
earlier (didn't have enormous success), can't decide about resampling. I'll
have a better try before I put any more images on a site.

DPI make no difference on the web. Really.

Look at the images here (especially the thumbs) -

http://www.fairfaxboulevard.com/f_node-photos.shtml

Do they look acceptible?

The only thing which matters on the web is absolute pixel dimension.

Perfectly acceptible... I've been playing around and have come to the
conclusion I need to rethink image size-reduction.
I just hope I live long enough to learn what I need to know <sigh>

I abandoned all hope of that when I turned 50, decades ago! 8)
