why does a rubik cube have 56 squares surely its 9 squares per side and six sides which is 54....? where do the other 2 come from?

Not having one here to dissect... Shouldn't it be 26? IE (3^3 - 1), the
-1 being for the center cube which I don't think is there.

Or another way:
8 corners
6 faces
<u>12 edges</u>
26 total
