Author Relative links failing
Amy Blankenship *TMM*

Hi, all;

I have a website, amgac.magnoliamultimedia.com, that I am trying to transfer
development of to another developer. When we set up IIS on his machine, the
relative links, such as to the CSS and images are failing, though the
relative include link works fine and the connection to the database works
fine.

Sometimes when we go to edit the site properties, we get the error message
"The site URL prefix [/amgac] for the testing server does not match the site
URL prefix [] specified in http address for the site. This may cause pages
using site relative links to display incorrectly at runtime." But the links
are document relative, not site relative, and I've never had to explicitly
set up a site in IIS to get it to work on my machine.

Any ideas?

Thanks;

Hi Amy:

the /at the beginning of that prefix suggests that indeed the links are site
relative. That's probably why IIS is having a problem .. because there is
only really one site root in IIS (the Default Web site) it's trying to go
all the way to the real root to start following the path and of course, that
is going to break. You can fix the links .. you can lie to IIS and set a
new root at the site door (but then you have to change it back to work with
any other site). There may be another way .. but since I use document
relative links, I don't remember what it is. :)

"root relative" is what DW calls them, and, yes - they will fail unless you
are using temp files to preview.

Are you asking what I meant when I said same or did you just not see that I
said same?

The behavior is exactly the same, since dreamweaver actually opens the
Localhost URL when previewing.

Or maybe you're asking what happens if he goes to just localhost, with no
directory or page? That page doesn't display (this page cannot be
displayed).

Thanks;

I think Murray's trying to establish if IIS is working correctly.

Like checking if there's gas in your car, the first stop with IIS issues is
to check that's actually installed correctly.

The first port of call is to see what happens when http://localhost is
entered into the browser.

A default Welcome page or a functioning ASP page would indicate that all's
well with the setup.

What do you see?

Yes - that's it. Thanks, John.

I thought when I said: "That page doesn't display (this page cannot be
displayed)." that maybe it would be pretty clear that when you navigate to
the root of local host, that you get a "this page cannot be displayed" page,
because the page doesn't display. Is there some further clarification I
need to add that would help on this? I am posting from a different computer
so it's not practical to copy and paste, but I've seen the message many
times and I'd sort of assumed anyone posting to this topic would kind of
know what I meant when I said that.

My partner has set the default site to the amgac folder and of course now it
works, but that's not the best solution long term.

Thanks;

Amy

Amy:

If when you browse to http://localhost you get a 404 message, then this
means that IIS is either not installed, or not properly started. In the
WXPPro (you are using XPPro, right?) Administrative Tools, there is
something called Component Services. Run that, select Services on the left,
and find "IIS Admin" in the list on the right. Does it say "Started"?

Yes, and the website shows as running as well.

On double-checking, it's not a 404...it's a 403.2 (forbidden read access).

Thanks;

So - something is seriously wrong then. //localhost should bring up the
default page in the Inetput/wwwroot folder. I am not sure what would cause
this, but I am sure that it's at the root of your problems.

To be honest, not much is clear to me at present about this situation.
[color=darkred]

So getting IIS set up correctly is the first thing to address.

Perhaps start with:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/247677/EN-US/

Alternatively just reinstall IIS from scratch since it appears that it's
never quite been installed correctly on his machine.

Is he running XP Pro?
