| Can anyone recommend a tutorial, source or book, for a newbie DreamWeaver 4 person (really dumb person) that walks one through the steps of opening and converting an existing site to DW4?

| I haven't used that version in a really long time, but have you looked
through the tutorials that are accessed from the Help menu? They should
take you through setting up a site and once you have done that and pointed
to the local folder, converting an existing site would really just involve
checking pages for link problems and FTPing to your remote location.
Unless the current site was done in Front Page and there are FP webbots
involved. Those would not be recognized and you would have to use either
CGI scripts or a server model programming language such as ASP, PHP or Cold
Fusion to accomplish what the webbots once did.
