Author Preview in Browser - links don't work in IE6

using Dreamweaver 8. My links are document relative, they work correctly when I
preview using Firefox, but don't work when I preview using IE6. They work
correctly in IE6 when I upload the files to the web.
Any thoughts?

Can you post the URL?

When you preview from DW, with F12? I would need to see your code.

URL is:

www.jlf.com/waterWeb/html/browser.html

The links dont work when I hit F12 to preview in IE6 locally; the links work
fine on the web.

My local site folder is under 'My documents'. This means that there are spaces
in the path, which is one theory I have about why the links dont work locally.
However, Dreamweaver Help says to put the local site folder under My documents.

Thanks, Jo and Murray.

I suppose it's due to the mark of the web on those pages.

But - looking at your code, I see some things I must comment on....

1. Don't use the Navbar feature. Just use simple image swaps instead.
It's less code, and easier to understand.
2. I see lots of layer rules in your CSS - I hope that doesn't mean you are
planning on using Layers as a layout approach.

Thanks for looking at this Murray.
I have to use the mark of the web in the files for when I preview in IE6
locally; if I don't I, then IE blocks the active content. So I assume that's
not what's causing links to not work.

Re navBar - I like some of the features it offers
Re layers - I like how they are so much easier to lay out than tables are. Are
there disadvantages? I could always convert them to tables as a last step. I'm
also considering using div Tags.

Thanks

You can allow Active content by (in IE) clicking on Tools/Internet
Options/Advanced/(security) and check allow active content

That's my point. It doesn't offer any features other than swapping images.
And it uses more code to get there. I don't recommend that anyone use this
antique.

You have no idea how many disadvantages there are. Using layers as a
principle layout approach is one of the biggest mistakes you can make in
learning how to build pages. If you want to know why, I can go into detail
for you.

> I could always convert them to tables as a last step.

That's the next biggest mistake. Building a page with layers and then
converting to tables makes a page that will break in the breeze, and is
impossible to maintain.

> I'm
> also considering using div Tags.

A layer *is* a div tag that is absolutely positioned. But not all div tags
are layers. And using div tags *would* be a good way to do this, but you
need to study HTML and CSS hard to get to the point where you can be
successful with this.

For now, just use tables. Learn how to do that, too, though, by reading the
table tutorials at the DW FAQ link in my signature.

Thanks for the advice, Murray.
My main goal is to create websites that are easily updated and revised, so I really want to learn CSS.
I'll check out your dwfaq link.
