Author Using Dreamweaver on a network UNIX server

I have lots of experience authoring on internet websites and on a windows based
network share, but this is different!

I need to establish a developing environment for my Dreamweaver authoring, on
a UNIX share in a network environment. I am told by my IT person that is not
possible to use Dreamweaver, that I need to interface with the UNIX environment
using hummingbird/citrix.

If I cannot directly author using Dreamweaver on a UNIX box, can I author
locally and then use the Dreamweaver `site' function and FTP it to that share
on the network server?

Yes. But the VERY best way would be to develop locally, and use the Unix
box as a 'staging' remote site. Would that work for you?

I second Murray's suggestion. Since you can't run DW on a *nix machine,
developing locally and FTPing (or SFTPing since you're on *nix) to the
server is the best option.

At my previous employer, we developed on Windows and deployed to Solaris
without a hitch.

Best regards,
Chris

Murray, thx for the quick response.

Yes that would work, let's see if i understand what you are saying. So even
though I would have access to the unix server, I would be authoring locally.
And when I wanted to upload my changed files, I would upload them using the
upload button in dreamweaver site view, causing those files selected on the
right panel to ftp and write to the `site' on the left site panel. Conversely,
I could update my local copy of the site by downloading the files from the UNIX
share to my local copy. And, using the ftp function of dreamweaver for both.

Yep - that's about the size of it. That should work well....

Not to beat a dead horse here, but assuming all of the above is set up, the
normal users could not view the site unless the share was also web enabled, OR,
they had network access, but even then their window machines could not see
files on a unix box so they would need something like hummingbird/citrix, thus
that is not a practical solution.

is the Unix machine a web server? or do you mean by a "share" that it's just
allocated disk space on the box?

its a unix box that people have network access to. It is not at the moment web enabled. yes allocated space on a unix box. All laptops have windows operating systems.
