Sorry, I thought it might be a common problem that was easily identifiable. Here is a link

Well I did that and I'm still having the problem. I'm sure it's in how I'm
using my table so hopefully someone can tell me a rule or two about tables.
Besides, the general tags such as head, body, and doctype don't usually affect
tables. I would have pasted the table into a new doc once I got it going. As
I suspected, after creating my new document, the table still flies apart. Any
other suggestions?

That is really bizarre! It looks like it is your JPEG image that is being
"split apart" when the browser renders it (I looked at it in IE) so it's no
longer a normal rectangle. FWIW, I right-clicked and downloaded the image to my
PC, and in a normal JPEG viewer it looks like it is supposed to.

Maybe you should set your table width to 800 instead of having it at 200 and
then loading an 800-wide image.

The jpeg itself is fine. My problem is that when I start inserting my images
into the table the table goes apeshit. I can often solve the problem by doing
nested tables, but I seek to know WHY it does this. And if it is just me that
is doing something wrong. Are nested tables the best way?

Again, I'm far from an expert on this, but it doesn't seem right (or at least
consistent) to define a table with <table width="200"> and then just below
define a spanning table cell with an image of width="800". Isn't that like
putting 800 pixels of stuff in a 200-pixel bag?

no gordon, if you read the original post you'd know why I did that. You insert
images into a table with no defined width or s amll width and the images
(including spacer gifs) are supposed to stretch it out to the proper width

Your table width is set to 200. Try to get rid of the table width attribute, or
set it to 800.

I typically use nested tables a lot. It helps prevent the "flyaway" effect
Dreamweaver has when it's trying to reconcile row and column sizes with itself.

Try creating an 800 px wide table, 1 row, 1 column, then insert 1 table 100%
for each row you're looking to add. The table can contain multiple columns as
needed for the number of images you have.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Tim, that is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I did get it to work with
nested tables, but I wanted to verify that others use the same practice. So it
sounds like the flyaway effect is normal.

By the way, I just upgraded from DreamMX to 8 and it is annoying the crap out
of me! the interface is awful. Any way to go back to the old style interface?
Or at least, is there any way to keep my css file from opening everytime I
want to update a style?

Nevermind, I found where to keep CSS from opening, but in general, any way to go to an earlier Dream layout?

Thanks Nadia, that's BRILLIANT!
