Author Advice on designing a site for PHOTOS

Advice please.
I'm wanting to design a site, no more than 20 pages, for photographs and
little text.
I want to use thumbnails but my main concern is for fast loading photos, both
thumbnails and main image.

I've gone into the "source" on many such sites and see that javascipt features
heavily.
Is this what I should be considering?

Obviously I'm not that experianced so would welcome any advice.

Thanks,
PFMarconi

In this scenario I would simply create a css layout, there really is no need
for javascript IMHO. I've got a site here dellimages.com that I'm working on
at the moment. Might be of help, the images are heavy though....Just
personal preference, I don't think a photographer should optomise his/her
images too much.

The most important thing you can do is to learn some HTML - what it is, and
how it works. To build something presentable and functional, you will need
to have that knowledge under your belt. Then you can start working on your
site....

Here is an image of something I'm working on, very much brighter than
dellimages but based on the same code/css
