Author DW8 crashes on creating new site

I have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled, reinstalled DW 8
Studio, and I continually have the same problem. I can't define a site. All I
have to do is click on NEW SITE and DW crashes. It blanks out and stays white
and stalls my computer for about 45 seconds, and then finally crashes.

DWMX2004 works just fine on my computer. But DW8 is a disaster!!

Hope someone knows what I can do, because I really wanted to start using DW8,
but at this rate, the CD is going in the trash! I have two clients I am
working for at the moment and they're depending on me, and this is becoming a
real issue.

Thanks, PJ

I recommend you contact Macromedia directly and use one of your one-on-one
support incidents.

Pea-Jay....I have had the same problem and appreciate your frustration.

DId you get a solution? Does anyone have a remove tool that will competely remove DW 8?

Well, a couple things that I did that were helpful and at least DW8 doesn't
crash and doesn't go blank on me. I get that message occasionally (after the
fixes) but not nearly as much. I deleted the WinFileCache-7A9586CB.dat (or a
file like it) and then installed the DW8 updater. It's pretty much fixed. In
fact, it's fixed enough that I will deal with the few times that it happens as
opposed to having paid a fortune for DW8 and not being able to use it at all.

That file is found in the configuration folder.

I hope you are able to try this and see if it helps. Believe me, I know the
frustration, especially when DWMX worked flawlessly..

Try it and see if it helps you too.

Also there is another option that I was given (Murry helped me with this but I
can't find that post here - I just printed it out so I'm quoting from the post
that I printed):

Find this file -
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver8\Configuration\SiteCache\<sitename>.dws

(these folders are normally hidden - you may have to use Explorer > Tools >
Folder Options to unhide them,
and then delete it.

If that doesn't work, delete the WinFileCache. That is what finally worked
for me, plus the DW8 updater.

Thanks for the reply. i will try that. Where would I look for the cache file? I
have it fixed now that if I block DW8 through my firewall it pops right to the
define new site dialog box. If I have firewall set to allow DW8 it hangs for 30
seconds before showing.

I already did the update but that alone did not help. Anymore suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could find Murray's post. But I'll try to get all of this correct, in
the order I did it.

Close out DW. And just for drill, close out everything else you have open.

Find this file - locating the file by this path:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver8\Configuration\SiteCache\<sitename>.dws

(these folders are normally hidden - you may have to use Explorer > Tools >
Folder Options to unhide them,
and then delete it.

Delete that sitename.dws file (it doesn't say sitename - it'll say whatever
site you have named yours). I think I actually deleted ALL my sitename.dws
files for every site I had.

Then restart DW. If it still doesn't work, which it didn't at this point for
me, CLOSE DW.

Then go to the PARENT CONFIGURATION FOLDER, and look for the file that looks
like this (you'll probably have different numbers) WinFileCache-7A9586CB.dat.

Restart DW. Then I installed the updater.

That is when things improved GREATLY. I occasionally have the problem, and it
may be that I need to go back every once in a while and deleete that .dat file,
I don't know, but it does not happen nearly as often.

I wish the PROS would address this issue in its entirety, why this is
happening, if there is a PERMANENT fix for it, or if you and I (because
apparently no one else is having this problem) are the only ones so it's
insignificant.

But first I'd uninstall DW (

I did all that you outlined. I did try to uninstall DW but it does not actually
remove everything. When I reinstalled it was as if I had never taken it off. My
reg was still there all my sites and the updater was done.

I am still waiting on the maker of my FW to let me know what is going on. It
doesn't do it will al firewalls though since I tried the trial on a test
machine with ZA Pro security suite and it works flawlessly with that firewall.

I've tried everhting I can think of short of getting rid of my firewall but
since I am doing a beta with MS for OneCare then I can't do that. Like I said
it is not as if it is totally keeping me from using DW but a significant hassle
to wait 30 seconds for a dialog box to open. I guess I am just picky but it
drives me nuts when things don't work as they should. May that is why I get
picked to beta so much.

I know exactly your frustration! I don't know enough about the inner workings
of DW to suggest anything else but what Murray had outlined for me to do.

So I do hope he either sees the posts, the PLEAS :D, or has other solutions,
or possibly this is a glitch in some of the DW software, maybe not all of it.

I have never had this problem EVER and I've had DWMX2004 (and all the previous
DWs) on various computers, including the one I have now. And of course DW8 is
now on this computer.

So I'm at a loss as to what else to suggest for you to do. We can only hope
that the professionals and the ones who are knowledgable in this stuff will see
the posts.

Good luck, and if I hear anything else I sure will repost!

Go into Edit, Preferences. Choose Category - General. Uncheck the option to Show start page. For some reason, this worked for me.
