In MX 2004 only email is required for checkin/out but in 8 it askes for a
username as well. This means that I can't open the files I have put up to the
website from 8 in MX 2004. This is a problem as I want to use 8 at work but
only have MX 2004 on my home machine. I am using Windows XP.

Yep, we noticed this too, the who check in/out set up in DW is a bit flaky. If
you set up MX with email joe@user.com and joe user, then on another machine
joe@user.com and j user - it thinks they are two different users, even though
the required field - email is the same.

To answer your question, you should be able to work around it by checking
everything it from both versions. Then update your MX Site Setup to include
your username - the same as you have in DW 8. Then try checking out a file in 8
and see if you can do the same from MX.
