software like wordpress? (personally, i would like to be able to create mine)

you *can* create a forum yourself, using a server-side language (PHP, ASP etc.)
but that's far from easy, and if you're not very familiar with a server-side language, you should
use a third-party blogging software.
There are a few, that are free; the only one I have used myself is phpBB
http://www.phpbb.com/
you can download it for free. Your hosting server must support PHP of course, and must provide one
database.

| I'm with the guy above.
Use http://www.phpbb.com/
I've used it twice and have had no problem. There is a decent amount of
support on their forum. If you want to see an example of what I've done with
it, go to:
www.jollyrogergames.com
and click on forum. I changed all of the styles so that it matches the site.

| As others have mentioned, don't try and reinvent the wheel when there are
3rd party apps out there.
You mention CF server, so take a look at these:

CF: http://www.cfcode.com/index.cfm/fuse/products.htm
