Just recently, when creating a new template, it looks fine until I name it and
then it loses all CSS styles while in Dreamweaver ... when I view in a browser
the styles are there. How do I get them back in DW?
Thanks!

Show me one of these templates, please.

This is a child page, not a template.

Also, I see that you are using the DW/FW pop-ups in this page. Have you not
been around here enough to know how toxic this is?

Yes, you are absolutely right ... I thought you wanted to see a page created
from the template.
The template is at http://www.3crepes.com/main.dwt

Re. menu ... I have yet to find a replacement for the Fireworks dropdown menu
.... in the meantime ... the site has a text site map.

Your help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Everything looks OK in that template file. Can you describe the symptoms
again for me please? Does this only happen in this site, or in others?

As long as you've been here? Have you investigated the PVII menus? They
are MUCH better, and template friendly, as well. The menus you have chosen
are incompatible with templates as you'll discover when you try to edit
them.

Do you see the reason why the styles don't appear when viewing in DW ... only in the browser?

Sorry ... I posted before I realized there was a second reply ...

This is the only template for that site main.dwt
and http://www.3crepes.com/valentine.html is a new child
When I open the child in DW the styles do not show, only in browser preview.
When I first create a new file (page) ... everything is fine, when I save it
as 'something' the styles disappear.

Murray *TMM*

2006-01-30, 10:53 pm

Is this the correct path to the stylesheet in your local site from where
that page is saved?

<link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

If so, then the styles will show in DW. If not, then you have a problem with
the way your local site is defined.

The C-Drive is the root of your site? Can you go to the Advanced tab and
tell me what's in the Local Root Folder field, please?

I appreciate your valuable time and your willingness to help me.

The path to the style sheet is correct <link href="styles.css"
rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

The site is defined as follows:

What would you like to name your site?
3 crepes

Do you want to work with a server technology such as ColdFushion,
ASP.NET,ASP,JSP, or PHP?
No, I do not want to use a server technology

How do you want to work with your files during development?
Edit directly on server using local network ... and I point to the folder on
c-drive

Done.

Is it that I should select Edit local copies on my machine, then upload to the
server when ready (recommended)?

If I attach the style sheet to the child, it's okay ... but how bad would that be to do?
Could it be DW installation became corrupted?

I'm really puzzled ... If everything looks good and it's not a bad installation
.... the unknown is still causing me a huge problem. It's quite impossible to
create a new page without seeing my styles. If I add the style sheet to the
child page ... what would that do to the integrity of the page? I don't see a
problem with doing that except when I update the template, I would probably
have to go back to new pages and add the style sheet again! What are your
thoughts?

Murray *TMM*

2006-01-30, 10:54 pm

Create a new page from the template. Do you see the styles? Save the page.

Sounds like you might be on to something :)

I create a new page from the template and yes, I see the styles.
I save the page and the styles are gone (within Dreamweaver) ... when I hit
F12 and view in the browser they are back.

Murray *TMM*

2006-01-30, 10:54 pm

So - create a new page, and before saving it, copy and paste the stylesheet
link into a reply. Then save it and copy and paste the link again. Let's
take a look at those....

Sorry Murray, I'm not following the instructions ... what do you mean
copy/paste as a 'reply'?

Okay ... I get it ... :)

This looks like exactly what I would expect. I cannot imagine why the mere
act of saving the file causes the CSS to fall away from DW's design view....

Sorry.

New page from template (before it is saved):
<link href="file:///C|/3crepes/styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style type="text/css">

After CSS Styles are added:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/main.dwt"
codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<head>
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->

No matter where the curser is, the .css is added to the very top. This adds
an extra line at the top of the page that I can't remove.

I really appreciate how you have stuck with me through all of this ... I think
I need to give it up and leave the MetaTags inside of the locked region. Are
the search engines' robots/spiders able to read the tags of a page created from
a template with locked regions?

Thanks!

Murray *TMM*

2006-01-30, 10:54 pm

Can you zip the site's root folder and email it to me? I want to see this
happen on my system.

I wouldn't worry about meta keywords, since they are not used by any of the
major search engines. As for the page description, I'd just put a
page-specific one in each child page - you would use the editable region
that is already in the head of the page for that.

You do mean just the main template correct, not the entire site!

Like I mentioned, I think perhaps I messed up the template when I attempted to
leave the Meta Tags outside of the locked region ... once I made a new
template, leaving it to Dreamweaver as to how that is done ... the styles
remain intact.
