| In versions MX and MX2004 the Arrange Panels command is dimmed. It sure would be nice if this feature worked. Has anyone else had this problem?

| Am also having a problem with a grayed out "arrange panels" drop down list selection. Am a neophyte---any suggestions (besides giving up on DW)?
| |
|
| This has to be a problem within the program. I teach at a community college and
we have DW on quite a few computers. Same problem on all of the computers.
But don't give up on DW. It is a wonderful program.

| What is it you are trying to do? Why do you want that option?
It's not enabled for me too, and frankly, this is the first time I've
noticed it.

| I am revising my Dreamweaver MX textbook for MX 2004. The book has images for
each step. I want to show the Arrange Panels feature to the students.
Also have a new problem. I have about 30 images in a site in an images folder.
In the Assets panel, only eight images display (both gif. and .jpg). I have the
Site options button selected....so not sure where this problem came from.

| What is the arrange panels feature going to do for you? I can understand
the ideal goal of demonstrating every feature of the program, but is there a
practical aspect here?

Try recreating your site cache. In DMX2004, it's SITE | Advanced > Recreate
Site Cache.

| Well this is interesting.
My Arrange Panels is not greyed out, which is what I assume you mean by
dimmed, and it does work.
This, in spite of my other panel problem - see the thread "Why don't my panels
open when I launch?"
When I click on Arrange Panels, the panels jump back to some default position
where the developers no doubt thought that I would want my panels to appear.
It would be nice instead if there was the opportunitity to create Workspace,
as in Photoshop and InDesign, where you can open all the panels you want, place
them in whatever part of your screens you like best, and then save that as a
Workspace. You can even save several different versions if you want to and
clidk from one to another, depending on the size document you're working on.

| No way I could demonostrate every feature of the program (way too many)-- so I
concentrate on what I feel is most widely used.
What happens within a classroom environment, however, is that as students use
the program, they open and close different panels and experiment with different
options. Then the instructor tries to demo something and 30 students have 30
different screens and every hand is up asking for help. So if the instructor
can bring everyone close to the same screen by telling them to click the
Arrange Panels command, it makes things a lot easier and cuts down on much
confusion.
I teach in a large community college in Tampa (45,000 students), so I get
students with a variety of backgrounds and knowledge. The background that a
student brings into the classroom can vary from never having used DW to being
fairly proficient. I also teach this as a total online course, so it is very
important that the screens match the step-by-step instructions. When these
online students start experimenting opening and closing panels and so on and
are totally confused, simply telling them to click the Arrange Panels command
makes it much easier for them.
Most of the students coming from a Microsoft background encounter a very
difficult learning curve -- I would estimate that at least 70 percent or more
of the students have used only Microsoft products. It takes about 3-4 weeks
before they are comfortable inthe Macromedia interface.
Another issue I ran into has to do with the Start page. My book is part of
Course Technology's Shelly/Cashman series and th default for screen captures
for this series is 800 x 600. You cannot see the entire Start page at 800 x
600. Also, in 800 x 600, when the panel groups and the Property inspector are
both displayed, the panel groups hide the right side of the Property inspector.
So the student cannot use the Point to File or Browse for File icons to create
a link unless they close the panel groups. And, if you close the panel groups,
then you cannot point to a file.
Additionally, the Property inspector Options menu, and the Quick Tag Editor
and Help icons are hidden when the panel groups is displayed. On the Macromedia
Web site, it indicates that the program default is 800 x 600. That may be so,
but this is very confusing for students....and all of the computers at my
school in our computer science dept. (about 350 computers) are set at 800 x
600. I do workshops and presentations all over the country and most schools
use this same resolution. So basically, what I had to do in this revised book
is have the students disable the Start page.
Thanks for the tip on recreating the Site cache. I was not familar with this.
I had to close the program and then open it again - but it worked.

| This is interesting. We have a site license for MX 2004 Studio at school and I
have a copy of MX 2004 Studio which the publishing company purchased for me.
The Arrange Panels command is dimmed out on all of the computers at school and
on my laptop where I have the individual copy of Studio installed.
I have not had any students indicate that on their home computers the Arrange
Panels command is available.
Is your copy of DW an individual copy or is it part of the Studio group?
| |
| jmf3001 2005-01-06, 7:17 pm |
| It is part of the MX 2004 Studio.
Also, I'm on a Mac, if that matters.
Usually, when something like this comes up, i'm in just the opposite position
- by being on the Mac, some feature doesn't work for me that seems to work for
Windows users.

| Did anyone ever find a solution to the dimmed Arrange Panels command? I am a
new user of Dreamweaver and have been reading some of the discussions to help
familiarize myself. After reading this one I checked and my Arrange Panels
command is also dimmed. I agree with jmf 3001 that it would be nice to be able
to create a workspace, but as I am not yet completely familiar with the default
workspace it would be nice if I could just click on Arrange Panels and have the
panels realign themselves.
