Reliably crash DW8

| I upgraded to DW8 and have a problem similar to past versions except it got
worse. I use a testing server on my LAN running Win98 and PWS to develop ASP
websites. At this moment, I cannot do a Synchronize command. This used to
work in MX and MX2004 but now DW cannot figure out when a file needs to get
uploaded. That's not my biggest problem but what is the use of having this
tool if I need to cherrypick the files to upload? The real problem is:
whenever I want to Put a file to my testing server, I need to switch the FIles
list back to the local server and then return it to the testing server. I
usually leave the file list on the server I most recently accessed, so it is
often left displaying the Testing Server. If I rightclick on a Testing Server
file and choose Put, DW8 will usually upload to the remote server and then
crash without a trace. As I said, if I switch the Files list back to local
server and then immediately switch back to testing server, then i can reliably
Put files with no problem. Every version of Dreamweaver had a similar problem
where it lost its sense of direction and put files on the remote server after a
right click Put in the testing server Files window. This can be a disaster too.
Any workarounds? I have tried to click the recycle icon to refresh the file
list on the testing server before putting but this doesn't eliminate the
problem. Now I am continuing to switch the Files view back and forth (when I
remember to).
By the way, I will accept cash, free software, a trip, or any other valuable
reward for being a beta tester of DW8.

Make sure that when you choose synchronize, your ROOT web folder is
highlighted... Not a file within it. That should work.

Hi Mark
First off, we do loads of asp sites, testing over a LAN, and there never was
a problem in any version if you done the site setup correctly.
However, your setup is a chance for disaster ... get rid of that Win98 OS
with the awful PWS, install XP Pro with the IIS, and everything will run
like a charm. That anything is running with that ancient Win98 OS is sheer
luck at this point.
The testing server being in the same locale than the local site (just fill
out the two windows, testing and local, accordingly), there are not 3 sites
in three different locations (local, testing, remote), but 2, local and
remote with the testing server being IIS ... it works like a charm, since
years, on dozens of sites.

| Wish I could upgrade but I'd have to raid the college fund to do it. So I am
stuck with Win98, PWS, and an expensive programming tool that crashes and
uploads to the wrong server. I still have a problem with Sync, even when I do
it from the root but I can live with it. The crash problem kills me because I
lose my Undo stack... Oh well.

| Why can't you redefine your testing server to run from your local system?

| It's the testing server that is W98, Angela.

| Hi Mark,
Is the machine you're working on Windows 98 or just the one you're
connecting to? If you're working on 98 with Dreamweaver 8, consider yourself
lucky that anything works. Windows 98 is not supported in DW8...
You may want to make sure your machine meets the minimum system
requirements:

Wish I could help solve your issue; sorry this isn't the help you were
hoping for...

| Mark,
I think the primary problem is that DW8 has serious bugs using sync while
using the "Local/Network" access method. It will alter timestamps while PUTing
files. This appears to make local/network sync useless in DW8. Here in our
dev environment we may have to resort to setting up a "local" FTP server just
to get something working.

| DW8 no longer alters the timestamp when you synch files.
