Windows Home SP2
peppesbodega2

2005-09-16, 7:37 pm

It just happend to me as well.
Win XP pro SP2. Desktop X, Windows Blinds, Antivirus closed before install.
This was a reinstall. First install refused to go into Manage sites. Program
stopped answering every time i tried to make a new site or open a site. I could
import old sites but not entering them.
I?ve already outruled the bug where files have got a strange timestamp.
:confused;

peppesbodega2

2005-09-17, 4:20 am

Thats what i did, Closed down: Desktop X, Windows Blinds, Object dock and Norton.
Gonna try again now. Throwing all macromedia maps away. Even hidden ones in Application data and shared files.
peppesbodega2

2005-09-17, 4:23 am

Fixed!
Uninstalled everything on the computer from Macromedia. MX 2004 was already
uninstalled.

Deleted Macromedia in the regestry (Current user>software>macromedia)(local
machine>software>macromedia)
switched on "hidden files"
Deleted folders with macromedia in Documents and settings. (application
data)(local settings>application data)
Deleted folders in the progams folder. (shared files)

Closed everything down that?s not important to the OS.
Installed and all is working properly.

Now i just wonder what bugs we will meet next. `Cause if we have problem just
installing we will probably have alot of more bugs in this premature release

Bear in mind that you are in the minority here. Many people have installed.
Very few have had such problems.

And your judgement of premature is premature in my opinion. You have no idea
the extent to which this release was tested.

Just an update... I uninstalled and reinstalled DW8 3 times over the weekend,
even following peppesbodega2's advice (removing Application Data for
Dreamweaver and main registry key for Dreamweaver)... even killed all TEMP
files before reinstalling... still not running.:|

Dammit! I can't get DW8 to start anymore! Can someone help me?

Pull the choke out half-way, and hold the gas pedal to the floor.

What operating system?
Trial version or ?
What does it seem to do when you try to open the app?

Same problem here. My post from another thread below. Wish someone would
figure this out..

--

I downloaded the DW8 trial, and installed it on XP. It worked fine for the 1st
day.

Then, on day 2, I chose the trial (versus buy) option on the startup
page/screen. It started to launch the application, but then failed (DW panes in
taskbar just disappeared).

I tried completely uninstalling DW and reinstalling. No luck. Then I
uninstalled and re-downloaded the trial from macromedia. No luck. Finally,
after reading a few posts on this site, I tried renaming the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver
8\Configuration (to xconfiguration, although I assume any other name works),
per Murray TMM's suggesstion. No luck.

I do not think that the trial has "timed out" as it informs me that there are
28 days left in my trial in the startup page.

Sorry, didn't mean to scream in my last post:)

I have the trial version of DW8 and I could only open it once and then it will no longer launch anymore. :(

Hey Murray -

Any luck fixing this problem?

Thanks,

Man, I just went through all of this crap too...

Here's what I did. Add/Remove on the DW 8 I had which would just launch and
say that it was corrupt (install worked perfectly, from a known good
installer). Anyway, I removed DW 8. I manually deleted the Macromedia folder
in Program Files, and removed all the Macromedia folders inside Program
Files\Common and the ones in username\Application Data\Macromedia.

Next, on one of my external drives there was a Macromedia Licensing folder!
Not on my main hard drive. I nuked that, and unplugged the drive.

Next I went through the registry and killed every single instance of the word
Macromedia.

Next, there was still a service for Macromedia Licensing in my Services. It
was set to manual startup for some reason, I changed that to Automatic.

I emptied the trash, emptied the temp folders, then reinstalled DW 8 and it
FINALLY worked. Sheesh! And all this just so I could run the damn trial and
see if I wanted to buy this or not.

Thanks Bob. I'll try once more.. perhaps I missed some folders. However, I'm
reluctant to modify the registry stuff. I've tinkered with registries before,
with usually unexpected/bad results (granted, I'm nowhere near an expert in
this field).

One question - After you "fixed" the problem, did it reoccur? I'd hate to go
through all that and only be able to use the software until my next restart.
For example, when implementing "Murray's" earlier fix (renaming the
configuration folder) I noticed that the software actually adds a folder with
the old name (and old contents) when you launch it (which perhaps impedes the
fix??). Similiarly, some of the items/problems that you are removing may
resurface(?)

Agree with your "all this trouble just for a trial" comment. I'm pretty close
to spending my $400 elsewhere.

Bob, I would do that, but I am scared because I have DWMX2004 installed on my
computer with over 15+ websites in varous folders, etc. I don't want to risk
screwing something up just to make DW8 trail work.

I'll just wait until Macromedia fixes this (if at all).

I don't know if your problems will resurface because what is happening for
you, as far as I know, is not a "known issue." That said, every time you
rename the configuration folder -- it will and should -- create a new folder
of the same name and contents. So that's at least, expected behavior.

HTH, :)

Well, I finally got DW8 running... appears to be something in the registry that
is causing the problem...

I had opened an incident with Macromedia Customer Support... here is my
response to them.

Response to customer support #999999.

Yes, I was finally able to get DW8 working last night. I had made 3 previous
un-install/re-installs that did not fix the problem. With each re-install, I
further isolated the problem.

In case this may be helpful, here is what did and didn't work:

Symptoms (as indicated in my first customer support contact):
After installing DW8, I was able to run it once... during that session, after
defining a site, and opening a file, I received a run-time error, which closed
DW8. My next attempted use of DW8 (a couple days later), I was unable to open
DW8. The Splash screen would appear, and then for a split second, the main
screen opened behind it. Then it disappeared.

My system: Running Windows XP Pro, SP2, 512MB RAM, 8GB Free Space on main
drive.

First uninstall/reinstall... removed DW8 using Add/Remove Programs. Rebooted.
DW8 still did not work.

Second attempt... removed DW8, cleared browser cache, cleared TEMP folder.
Un-installed Dreamweaver via Add/Remove Programs... rebooted... reinstalled...
DW8 still not working.

Third attempt... removed DW8, cleared browser cache, cleared TEMP folder,
cleared HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Macromedia\Dreamweaver, cleared
<boot>\\Documents & Settings\myProfile\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver
8 folder. Un-installed Dreamweaver via Add/Remove Programs... rebooted...
reinstalled... DW8 still not working.

Final attempt: Ran some troubleshooting techniques... renamed
\\..\myProfile\Application Data\Macromedia and ran DW8... did not run, no
error... restored folder. Renamed \\..\All Users\Application Data\Macromedia
and ran DW8... did not run, no error... restored folder. Removed
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Macromedia\Dreamweaver; removed
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8; removed
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Common; removed
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\Dreamweaver.exe\shell\Edit
with Dreamweaver\Command (contained path to Dreamweaver MX, which I had trialed
last year); removed
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\aspfile\shell\Edit\command (contained hex
code that appeared to be suspicious). Attempted to run DW8, and the application
loaded past initialization screens, then displayed an error that there was a
problem with the installation, and to reinstall. I uninstalled DW8 via
Add/Remove Programs, rebooted, re-installed DW8, and it worked. Ran it 4 times
last night to verify operation, and ran it twice today, without a problem.

Hope this information is helpful.

Please let me know if you need additional information.

Thanks, Clark

===========================
Additionally, I discovered that while DW8 was broken on my main profile, when
I logged on as a different user, DW8 ran OK (although the menu configuration
was backwards).

With any luck, it won't break again... hopefully Macromedia will discover the
exact cause and fix it in a future patch.

It is not starting for me either on Mac OS X. Licensed copy. When start
it, get the Mac hourglass thingie for several seconds, no splash
screen, then nothing. Haven't used DW in a few weeks, but it was
working fine back then. Macromedia is listing this as an "emerging
issue" on their website - last update Sept 29. There they suggest
renaming the configuration folder and then trying to start. But they
apparently don't have a lot of confidence in that solution because they
also say to contact them if that doesn't work - which it didn't for me.
They give the location of the config folder for both PC and Mac, so
evidently it is indeed an issue on both platforms.

I haven't done any troubleshooting yet beyond deleting the prefs file
and trying that Macromedia suggestion.
