| I just bought Dreamweaver 8 for someone, and though I am a Windows
programmer, I have never used web page software. I am trying to comprehend
a few things about Dreamweaver, even after viewing some introductory stuff
on the web.
Is Flash necessary in order to do basic animations of text and images, such
as appearing and disappearing, shrinking or expanding, or travelling from
point to point on the screen?
In order to play audio files, is an additional software needed?
Could someone point me to a site where these kinds of basic questions are
addressed?

| Flash is not necessary to do the things you are after but it probably one of
the easiest to develop them in. Animations can be created as gif files and
movement across the screen can be achieved using layers and timelines. Have
a look at my site for an example of that.
With audio files the short answer is yes, however it really depends upon the
media type. Most types will invoke whatever media player is on the client,
but some may require them to handle a download.

| I appreciate your help very much, and I have taken a look at your site.

| Let me ask this: Is Flash the assumed answer to the question, "How do I
play audio files in my Dreamweaver-based website?"?

| Yes, usually. It's the most widely supported method, I think.

| Thank you. I guess the fact that Flash has become a major video player is
reason enough to just get it and have its full media capabilities available
for our website production. I also think the overlap of some Dreamweaver
and Flash features (mainly in animation) is a bit confusing, but we will
figure that out in due time.
