Humm so far I can't really see anything major which makes me want to
rush out and buy it.

Ok a few nice touches but these are hardly critical, well not from where
im viewing it really.

I guess it depends on your degree of experience as well. After a few
hours testing so far its a big yawn. I guess there is only so far this
baby can be taken before it stops growing in vast leaps.

I've noticed there doesnt seem to be many posts around here either about
the new version compared to previous launches.

Well only those that say the download is corrupt or its stopped working
after a day.

The CSS rendering, the Design view additions, the Code view additions, the
background FTP, the Site management changes, the Workspace changes, the
additions of SB wizards, the XML/XSLT capabilities come to mind. Any of
those of interest?

My css always rendered pretty good in design view anyway. I know other
peoples didnt.

Code view additions are a nice touch but hardly critical.

Ive got used to not using padding on main containers so the design view
additions are partially useful.

Not sure what the SB wizards are? Maybe that will convince me.

I doubt I will need the XML/XSLT capabilities.

Ok they are all additions and a step forward in the right direction but
personally I'm rather disappointed with the upgrade so far. Probably was
expecting too much.

I'll probably go ahead and purchase it but I'm in no hurry to have it
instantaneously.

The trial version crashed my computer - the first time I powered up after
installing the trial, the computer wouldn't boot. I had to do a System Restore
in Safe Mode (which uninstalled the trial) to get the computer operational
again.

I'm not going to blame this on the software ... yet. I would like to be
convinced that it was a conflict of some sort, perhaps owing to the presence of
two different versions of DW on the same PC... ya think?

Definitely not. Each install of DW is a stand-alone instance of the
program.

What is your Antivirus? Was it disabled when you did the first install?

Since I mostly hand-code, I like the collapse code feature.

Right. I havent really worked out how useful that is to be honest. Im
trying to think ahead and visualise in what situation I would
desperately need to collapse the code.

I mostly hand code too these days but until collapse code was available
I havent really thought of, or encountered senarios which have even made
me think I would like to collapse the code. obviously a lot of people
have, otherwise it would not have been included.

I have a lot of PHP pages which run anywhere from 400-1000 lines of code.
Well I usually need to see something at the top of the file while I'm
working near the bottom. DW8 will save a lot of scrolling for me.

Hi Osgood,

To be honest I'm not sure I think it was worth the money (bought it
yesterday... not an upgrade as I needed it for a different PC so it was
479 euros).

I already use notepad for CSS so I'm not really sure what the CSS
improvement include... at least it's not obvious to me yet. But I guess
I'll figure out what the big difference is eventually.

I never used to build in FTP so I couldn't care less if there was an
improvement.

I like the code collapse thingy.

I heard something about XML features but I haven't found it yet.

I noticed Murray wrote something about SB wizards... no idea what it is.
But I normally don't like wizards. (you're not in control)

One thing I noticed is that DW8 no supports (x)html strict DTD's even
though I remember some time ago someone said it would probably never be
a feature in DW. At least not before version 10 ;)

The short version... save your money!

Kim, So far your assessment seems very much in keeping with mine and our
working practices i.e. not using the css panel or ftp are the same.

I'll concede that I do like the code additions but I could easily live
without them.

I probably will purchase as and when I feel like it but the upgrade
has'nt really left me thinking 'I really really do want this' to the
point where my credit card instantly appears.

Oh, I didn't realise they were only developing v8 for you. Pity about all
those features you can't use. Oh well, maybe someone else may find them
useful.

I'm back to working in DW MX2004. I'd like to try out DW8 but not if my computer is going to keep having boot-up problems
StepKna

2005-09-14, 11:17 pm

After using it for one day, i gotta say this: There is no huge new feature
there that makes me go WOW.. but, much more important to me, there is alot of
small things that makes my job easier and quicker, and this is well worth the
199 Bucks upgrade fee..

- For example the change where it inserts the matching closing tag after
typing </. I LOVE that one. MX 2004 was driving me nuts with dribbling closing
tags all over the place but never where i needed them.

- code collapsing. Ever since we abandoned Homesite in favor for DWs built in
Code Editor, i was sadly missing the collapsible code thingy.

-the new FTP client. A non modal window where you can keep working while doing
big transfers. I should be pissed actually, used to a perfect excuse to get up
and have a smoke or 3 while waiting for DW MX 2004 to give me back control. DW
MX 2004 was also forever and always giving me bogus messages like "file not
found on remote site" on checkout, which hasn't happened with DW8 so far.

- more details in the synchronize site features. We use that one alot, since
we got multiple people in different locations working on the sites.

- the improved "paste special" dialog, giving me more control over how stuff
gets copy&pasted. Alot of my time i spend on integrating new content into
existing sites, i.e. client drops a bunch of PDF, Word, or other HTML files and
tells me to make the contents appear on his homepage somewhere..

- i am a code cleanliness freak, i love seeing the line breaks and blanks in
code view.

- i do like te new CSS features, even though i prolly wont need/use it that
often. I had a case today were a part of a CSS style did not apply correctly
and the new css tab showing the hierarchy structure of the various nested
styles was showing the problem instantly.. much quicker than tracing the
problem down going through the huge mess of CSS stiles for that one site.

To me it felt like i was discovering some tiny or not so tiny improvements all
day while working with DW8 for the first day today. Nothing spectacular, i
agree, but if you earn your living with writing HTML, then every tiny little
thing that makes life easier and saves time is worth gold. Maybe on the
weekend, I will have some time to go looking more closely for what else is new,
atm, i am just trying to get my work done in DW8, and i think it is going
better with DW8 than it did wit MX 2004. I can see where a lot of people,
especially magazine reviewers, are saying the upgrade isn't worth it. But to
me, it is already worth the upgrade price and barring any big problems during
my remaining 29 days of free trial, this upgrade will be bought and DW8 will
replace MX 2004 for all of us here at my company.

The background FTP is a good timesaver. The bigger the site the more it saves.
One wish: It won't let you start an upload/download and switch sites - you must
stay in the same site.

I like the coding tweaks as well.

Did anyone notice problems with saving files on a testing server, or is it just
me?
DW8 seems to only want to save a file on the testing server only once every 2
minutes or so, despite if I modify/save it every 20sec, pretty annoying when I
have to quickly change some things several times in a short time range on a
file, the changes just don't show up on the testing server (in the browser)!
Annoying !
I double and triple checked it, it's not a cache problem, either on the
browser or web server level, even worse, somehow the file is probably being put
on the testing server (local lan), but probably with a wrong time stamp so the
web/application server (CF) thinks the file hasn't been changed, is that
possible, or am I missing something here?
Problem doesn't occur with dw7, so for now, I just stick with dw7.
