Author Generall CSS Questions

Dear All,
this is a very general question about the nature of CSS. Can conflicts arise
where the style properties of one selector interferes with the properties of
another.

Well, by virtue of the Rule of Greater Specificities, one rule can take
precedence over another rule, when both apply to the same element.

Yep. That's why it's called _Cascading_ Stylesheets: Multiple selectors
may apply to the same element(s).

No. The whole point of CSS is that there is a set of rules to determine
which style trumps which.

And what is this "conflict" like? Is certain text both green *and* red,
until the conflict is resolved?

You must mean something different by "conflict" than I would understand it
to mean. :-)

Rules conflict all the time. They interfere with each other all the time.
That's what the specificity is all about.

There must be some kind of semantic misunderstanding here. What would be a
"conflict"? Would the two rules duke it out on the page until one was down
for a count of ten? :-)

My understanding is that any "conflicts" are instantly resolved by the
browser's interpretation of the style sheet.

Yes. Precisely.

This stylesheet would create a conflict:

..navigation { color:red; }
..breadcrumb { color:blue; }

....
<p class="navigation breadcrumb">What color am I?</p>

and in this case the winner is the one closer to the element being styled.

Is that not a conflict?

Multiple rules may apply to the same element at the same time, that's
what I would call a "conflict". And CSS defines rules how to resolve it
(order, specificity etc.)

BTW:
This "conflict" is a quite important part of CSS, it's "the cascade".

Ok, we're all saying the same thing. To me, a conflict which is resolved by
rules written for that purpose is no longer a conflict. That's why I
answered "no". But I can understand now why you and Murray said otherwise;
it's just a different way of understanding the word "conflict" in that
context.

Honestly, no, I would not call a conflict which is instantaneously resolved
a conflict. But I do see why you say that. I think we're all saying the same
thing, but the words are getting in the way. :-)
