Author animation illustration realtime scripting?

I am attempting to create a run time story line/animation.

I do not want to fix a specific sequence of events, I want things to
unfold (realtime) based on user interaction, can anyone suggest a
graphics scripting language that I can utilise to accomplish this?

I was thinking of developing the characters and scenes
then use a script to control the story line consisting of these
objects.

I do not want to animate/illustrate every possible scenario and then
call a particular scene/event based on user interaction. This doesn't
seem sensible if there is a huge story/character line.

Thanks
