Author When changing Template, all Titles are lost

Hi-- when I change a template, all the pages that use that template lose their
titles. And to reenter them takes a long time!

Is there any way to edit Templates but also keep the original titles in all
the pages using those templates?

Thanks!

Or better, make them an editable region (manually). But best of all, is to
make the template correctly, in which case the title will already *BE* and
editable region!

hi,

I dont know what version of dw is in focus here, but i have dwmx 04 and when I
apply a template to an existing page, the template replaces the title of my
page with whatever content is in the title of the template. aka if the template
page title tag is empty then the page that i applied the template to will have
its title tag replace with an empty title tag. Now dreamweaver is fully
generating this template and the title tags are set by dreamweaver as an
editable region and still it replaces my title tags.

I am in the process of currently converting a site over to dwmx templates
which has several hundreds of pages and I really dont want to have to name
every single page.

Thanks for any help.
Jeff

This is a known bug in DW. As far as I know, the ONLY way to make that
happen would be to open a page, insert an editable region which converts it
to a 'template', and then save it with FILE | Save > whatever.dwt in the
Templates folder. If, instead, you open your page, insert an editable
region, and then use FILE | Save as Template, things will be created
properly.

The solution is to open the template(s) and manually add an editable region
around the title tag, i.e.,

<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="doctitle" --><title>Untitled
Page</title><!-- TemplateEndEditable -->

When you save it, all child page's titles will be editable.

By the way, it is a VERY bad idea to apply a template to a page with
existing content.

Using templates on a site this large may be a mistake unless you are also
using server-side includes for most of the 'changeable' boilerplate -
otherwise you will spend all your time uploading changed files. In
addition, when you convert this site, the only way to do it is to open an
existing page, spawn a new child page from the template, copy and paste
content from old to new, and then save the new page with the old page's
name.
