your browser cache), or b) browsing to the wrong file, or c) something else.

Agreed Murray.
Mind you, I have had code modified by a host in the past - but only adding a
line, not deleting it.
But I guess thats what happens when you (host company) has other interests
such as running a cut price airline, mega music retailer, and trying to set
global round the world records all the time - instead of specialising in
one thing - you start to think you can do what you want to the customer.
And, yes, it is in small print in the host's T&C's about adding the extra
line to source code on upload. ;-)
But hey, thats the UK for you I guess.

| Unfortunately it is possible because it happened. It happens on one particular
PC and none of the other computers in the same office. The PC used to work
fine. The error / erased code happens on two completely different sites hosted
with different companies in different cities. The error is on one partuicular
PC. I can update from any other machine. I have reinstalled Dreamweaver, but
have the same problem. It even got worse. At first it happened every second
time. Now it happens each time of uploading the same page, which means: all the
time.
Does anyone have any idea why that happens? I have run Anti-virus programs
too. It is the weirdest flaw ever.

can you take these steps on that machine?
make a new page.
type just one word into the body of the page.
save it as aaaaa.html or something.
click PUT.
open the F8 Site manager window.
Find the file on the local side.
right-click and pick Locate in remote.
GET that file and open it.
Is it intact and fine?

Well, if it doesn't happen on any other machine in the office - this would
be a slight insight that there may be something wrong with 'that' machine -
don't you think?
And, just to reiterate - it is 'not' a Dreamweaver problem.

| Hi Alan
Thank you for your response! I have uploaded a page and downloaded it again
through Dreamweaver (Put and Get). After downloading it to my local machine,
there was NO code at all on the page, not even the body tags. Any ideas? It
would be much appreciated.

| I also want to mention that I have used Dreamweaver since version 1. I have never had any comparable or any other problem with it except that version 1 was very unstable.

| The file size is zero? Did you try opening the page outside of DW, like
with Notepad or TextEdit?

| Well, I'm tapped. I don't have a good idea what might be happening.
Just to make sure I understand, this happens with every file, in every site,
when you upload it? All the code gets stripped out? You have these sites
at multiple servers?

| Yes it happened on three sites. I have not tried any other site. Have tried to
copy code for a shpooing cart a while ago. I copied from Dreamweaver straight
into the cart via a control panel - no ftp - and the same thing happened - the
code got stripped out. At the time I thought it was the shopping cart that was
faulty. I suppose that gives another clue ot the mistery.

IF the code was in the file in the local side of dreamweaver, and Not in the
file after uploading with the control panel's File Manager- that's taken
dreamweaver out of the loop.
Then it's the hosting, or the rights given that User on that account.
simple test- make a file with notepad or something. don't involve
dreamweaver. Upload with the hosting File Manager.
Is the file hosed? Then it's a hosting issue.

| Thank you all for your continuous effort to help with this unusual problem. The
pages were made in Dreamweaver. Updating any site with any username worked fine
until one day it did not work anymore. I have transfered files from a different
machine to the machine that has the mentioned error. Maybe the files have
corrupted something. I have not installed any additional software or changed
Dreamweaver settings or anything else. Maybe I have to clear out the machine.
Sometimes it can be such a small thing that can be changed and everything is
fixed. I was hoping for the magic advice, but might have to start taking action
now. Thanks again. However - if there is that person who has had the same
problem and knows what to do, please reply!!

| Please just answer the questions Alan posed. The only way to solve this is
to approach it systematically. He is trying to do that. Read his post and
just answer the yes or no questions.

Have just restored the system to an earlier point in time. Now Dreamweaver

will keep you posted. Thanks again.

Actually, here's a great way to get zero byte files. Have a hosting account
that has reached its limit in terms of capacity. Uploads will seem to
happen, no error message or anything. The filenames will be there, but
they'll have zero bytes. Might that be what is happening for you?

| I don't think so, because the first thing I did was delete a whole bunch of files and images to make sure there was enough room. Also, I did subsequently upload the files using another FTP.
| |
|
| What is the file extension of the files you are trying to upload?
What's the full filename.ext when doing a Get Info or right-click-->
Properties
a possible is that it's a banned file type on that server, so the server's
ftp client is erasing the file contents and creating the blank file with the
<body></body> tags.
another possible but rare thing is that something is hosed in your
dreamweaver installation. Backup the site definitions- uninstall/reinstall
and be attentive/careful when re-installing any Extensions, testing after
each one is installed to see if one of them is the culprit. (though i think
it's quite rare for an Extension to alter something in the ftp engine)
other grasps at straws- some wildly overprotective anti-virus/firewall
internet "protection" app on your computer. Suggestion- if using Norton
Internet Security- disable it and test.
> The files are 0K in size and when you look at the source code, it
> has been stripped to the tags that you show in your listing.
| |
| S Clarke 2005-09-22, 4:14 am |
| Can't be a banned file extension - all the files have extensions .html or .htm
No extentions installed
Norton not enabled
Last test: Opened up DW 8, cleaned files off remote site, transfered the
whole site (PUT), got the right file structure, with all the files listed.
Files are all 0 KB. Upload is very fast (too fast to be really transferring
anything), message box says transferring 0 KB.
Shut down DW 8, opened up DW MX, repeated the transfer operation, files
transfer normally. Can bring up the site in the browser and everything is
cool.
Shut down DW MX, opened up DW 8, repeated the transfer operation, got the 0 KB
files again.
You may be right about the install. Guess I'll have to try that.
Thanks.

| Thank you all for your efforts. I solved the problem by selecting "use passive
FTP". Strangely, I am sure I tried this before, but perhaps i was not being
methodical in my testing, and it was in conjunction with other desperate
flailings.
I did not expect this to be an issue, since I do NOT have this selected in DW
MX and have been happily FTPing since day 1. Why suddenly is this an issue?
In all, I have tested 4 different websites on 3 different hosts. None of them
has ever required me to use "passive FTP". As soon as I started using DW8, it
became an issue. As I said before, it still works fine in DW MX (without
passive FTP!)
I also don't understand, if it is a firewall issue, why it would accept some
files and not others (directories were created, image files were transferred)
and secondly, why it SUBSTITUTES a skeleton html file? When I tried to
transfer a small .txt file with a few characters as Alan suggested, it still
substitues the .html file. Wouldn't it just block the file? Maybe this has
to to with DW "features" that I don't know about.
Anyway, judging from the number of FTP related problems in this forum, I
suspect that it may be somewhat buggy. At the very least, the behaviour does
not seem to be consistent.
Again, thanks for your efforts.
