Page files seem bigger than they should

| Hello... I produce the site, ActorsLIfe.com. When I first started working with
Dreamweaver two years ago, I would post pages with lots of text... interviews
and articles. Unless they included a lot of photos, pages were generally in the
30-40kb range.
A while back, the page files seemed to be getting larger, even though I wasn't
necessarily including more text and pictures on a page. What used to create a
30-40kb page now generally produces a 60-80kb page. I don't remember changing
any settings, and I have tried everything from trashing the prefs to
re-installing the program, but the problem persists.
I noticed that when I look at the code view, that the formatting of the text
(in the code) is kind of funny looking. Each new paragraph of text is further
to right and each line contains fewer and fewer characters until it is
sometimes just one word for each line of code.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on what's happening and how to avoid it?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kipley

| Wow, a question at the top of the posts that I am also looking for an answer! I
have the same problem, except I haven't noticed as much bloating of file size
as the way the code is showing up. There are times I have one word and
several
lines down
another
word.
This is
irritating.
Why is it doing that, how can we fix it? I hate to have to go in and manually
erase all the spaces. I'm embarassed to show the code to my husband the
programmer! He'll tell me it's because I'm on a Mac, but it's when I'm on a PC
as well. Didn't notice this on older versions of Dreamweaver.

| Yes... that's exactly what's happening to my pages. The two I linked to above
are both on the exact same template with a similar amount of text and images,
but one is 38kb, and one is 57kb. The larger file also
has
text
that looks
like
this in code view.
Indeed, very frustrating.
I'm using Dreamweaver MX on a Mac. The thing is, I didn't used to have this
problem and I haven't changed computers since I started using Dreamweaver two
years ago.
Does anyone have ideas on why this is happening? Out of curiousity one time I
selected the text and applied "source formatting" to it. That actually seemed
to straighten it out a bit, but in all honesty I don't know what applying
source formatting means (or does). It didn't seem to make much difference in
the page file size.
Anyway... my main question is why two similar pages on the same template are
so different in size:
http://actorslife.com/joannaParson1.html
Any suggestions on why this is happening and how I might solve this funky text
formatting issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kipley

| What OS is your host using?
What OS are you using?
What OS-type line breaks are set in your DW preferences?

| I already looked at that page and gave you the report. Now show me a
similar page, please.

| Hi. In both of my postings, I have put links to two different pages. I will
post them again with this reply.
http://actorslife.com/joannaParson1.html
I appreciate the report you sent, but it doesn't help explain why the two
similar pages have about a 20kb difference in file size. Nor does it explain
why the formatting of the text in the code is so strange.
| |
| Kipley 2005-08-31, 7:35 pm |
| I just noticed in your replies that there is only one link showing. I will put
the location of both pages without making them links, and perhaps you'll see
them both.
This is the bigger page:
http://actorslife.com/LisaGold.html
This is the smaller page:
http://actorslife.com/joannaParson1.html
They're both on the same template and have a similar amount of text and
images, but the bigger file is about 20kb bigger than the other.

| I'm using OS 10.4 for Mac, but also had this problem using OS 10.2.8.
I don't know what OS my host is using, but will find out asap.
Line break prefs are set to CR (Macintosh).

| Yep - that's the webforum getting in your way of communicating with us over
on the NNTP forum side.
The second page you linked is this -

Looking at the markup on the page, it does look like your strange line
breaks are the problem. Try opening this page and using COMMAND | Apply
source formatting, and see what happens.

| This could be partly responsible. Let me know when you find out.
