Hello,

I'm new to dreamweaver and webpage creation in general, though I've used
Dreamweaver enough to make a few very basic pages. I've created a link to a
file on a website that I'd like people to be able to download/open so that when
a user clicks on the link to the file, they are given the usual (Windows?) box
that asks if you want to save the document or open it. If I simply use
dreamweaver to link to a document, clicking on the link opens the document in
the browser window. Sure, I could right click on the link and select "Save
Target As", but I find it easier for non computer literate people to just have
a window pop up asking to save or open. Thanks for any help!

1) Tell them to 'right click and save target as...'

or

2) ZIP the file and hope they are willing/able to unzip it

or

3) stream the file to the browser via server-side scripting/programming.

Murray, thanks for the unhelpful response. Yes I tried the search function
for "popup" but didn't find anything related to this kind of pop up. Yes, I
scrolled through a few pages of posts already and didn't find anything related.
If I knew the proper terminology for what it is I'm trying to accomplish, I
guess I wouldn't have posted something in the first place as I could have just
found a previous post or even used the software's built-in help function (and
guess what, I tried that too). I don't have another couple hours to waste
trying to figure this out. If you don't want repeated posts on this board,
then I guess you should close the board as there are few topics left that would
be considered new.....

Darrell, I might eventually be able to use the zip function, though most of
my users are not very literate in winzip. I think a simple training may do the
job though. For now, unless I can find a solution more like the popup prompt
I'm looking for, I 'll have to tell people to right click and save target as.
For Netscape, Firefox, etc... is the right click selection still "Save Target
As" or is the wording diffferent depending on the browser?

The solution is that you need to stream it via some server side programming.
Admittedly, this isn't the easiest option, of course.

Personally, the right-click option is what I always use.

Do you not have Firefox installed? If not, go install it. ;o)

In FF, it's 'save link as...' in IE, it's (in typical arcane MS language)
'save target as...'

I usually say the following:

to save these files to your hard-drive, right-click the link and choose
'save as...' (Mac users can ctrl-click the link)

Usually the 'save as...' is clear enough for them to figure it out.
