Author guestbook programming

I've looked into guestbooks before, and I know it has something to do with a
different programming language than HTML, and that it has to be supported by my
ISP, but presuming my ISP will support it, what is the programming language,
and does anyone know of a site that might have sample guestbook programmes. I'm
not interested in those banner heavy free guestbook sites, I'd much rather do
my own. Anyway any help would be much appreciated, cheers Mick.
