Dreamweaver - search and replace inserts random characters

Well the topic says enough really. I searched for ([^<]+) and replaced with $1 only to end up with:

original text???m??????????????\???????%

So everything after 'original text' was added somehow

Anyone knwo why?

Well, here's another strange behaviour. When detaching a page from a template,
dreamweaver will insert ?? or ?????. That's right, dreamweaver will actually
randomly insert chinese characters into your html.

All that and more for just $399,-

Thanks a lot Macromedia for wasting my time. I guess the fanboys will say, you
should upgrade to whatever. I think it should just work the way it should.
